Way after the fact but in case you were still wondering, 5150 has assault rifles and whatnot in the rules, so it can work just fine.
Most scifi gaming is pretty much just "vietnam in space" so it adapts just fine to near future games. |

Yes, several of the armies in 5150 are equipped with assault rifles, SAWs, SMGs etc. So it should work fine for what you are trying to do. |
