Hi, All!
I'm looking to purchase some Napoleonic prints tp frame for the man cave. I"ve looked on allposters.com, art.com, and on the websight of Cranston Fine Art in England. All of thme carry something I would buy but here's the question:
Who has the best quality? The Cranston prints are anywhere from 25% to 50% more than the other 2 companies.
So if you have purchased prints from any of these guys I would be very interested in hearing your about your experience.

Thanks!

John

Everything you need:

cranstonfinearts.com

I used to buy them through the Last Square in Madison Wisconsin. Not sure you can anymore but there are lots of other vendors that carry them.

Sorry I didn't see you had already tried Cranston. But how did you miss the military section? Just click on military or naval or air etc. Here is a link to some of their prints that are on sale.

I just did a search using Waterloo as the key word and got hundreds of prints to choose from. I have several of Cranston prints framed and hanging in my house.

Rallynow,

So you are satisfied with the Cranston quality?

Old Contemptibles31 Mar 2014 5:51 p.m. PST

I have never been disappointed but you pay for what you get. I mostly have limited edition prints and some uniform prints. My favorite artist they carry is Mark Churms. I have a signed limited edition print "Sikander Sahibs Yellow Boys" 184/1150. I had it archaically framed with a mahogany frame, double mated. Looks fantastic. My wife loves it too.

My Wife really likes that one.

Never been disappointed but YMMV.

They have a variety of prints at different price points.

There are also individual artist websites depending on what you want. I have prints by Don Stivers and Rick Reeves, and others but they are mostly American Military subjects.

Every print I have purchased has been printed on archival paper with high quality ink. But there again you have to pay more to get the best quality. I am a Museum Curator and I can tell you that what I have purchased is top quality.

Apparently I can't spell. I meant archival not archaically. Six years of college wasted. Good luck Stoneman1810. I always get a little nervous when I recommend something like this. But my experience with Cranston has been very good.

Again – thanks! I ordered 5 prints from Cranston last night.

Old Contemptibles01 Apr 2014 11:45 a.m. PST

Great, what prints did you order?

sidley01 Apr 2014 1:21 p.m. PST

Does anyone know of a good source of Napoleonic military prints featuring Austrians, as these seem to be in short supply.

stoneman181001 Apr 2014 2:06 p.m. PST

Rallynow,
Here's my order:
Soir d'Jena by Detaille
Battle of Austerlitz by Pascal Gerard
Friedland by Meissonier
Napoleon Campaign if France 1814 by Meissonier
Charge of the 4th Hussars by Detaille

Incidentially I have a limited edition print by Dale Galon – "Turning Point at Guilford" – nicely framed and double matted.I would like to sell this piece if you know of anyone who would be interested.

Best Regards,

John

Stoneman:

Nice choices.

Old Contemptibles01 Apr 2014 8:14 p.m. PST

Just be sure to have your framer use acid free archival materials. Acid free mats and backing. Archival glass to filter out some of the UV light.

Archival glass can't filter a 100% of UV light, so avoid direct natural light. That's the worst kind of light for fading. Don't smoke or let anyone else smoke around your art.

Nicotine is a toxic substance (it's used in insecticides after all) and can eat paper alive and actually changes the colors in the print. Keep the temperature in the room comfortable but consistent.

Avoid wild swings in temp. which can cause the paper fibers to flex too much. You're making an investment here, no time to muck around.

Don't take it to Hobby Lobby or it's UK equivalent to be framed. Seek a framer who is familiar with museum framing standards. Here in the states a framer can get certified for museum quality framing.

Do a product search with the keyword Austrian. That should get you started you might have to dig around a little.

Stoneman-can i piggyback? i will assume none of the prints on your list (which is a perfect list for my mancave)are singular- that is, there are more than one- can you shoot me some contact info?

Old Contemptibles01 Apr 2014 9:49 p.m. PST

…and keyword Austria as well.

stoneman181002 Apr 2014 6:48 a.m. PST

le Grande Quartier General:

cranstonfinearts.com is the site. I searched "Austrian" and brought up quite a few prints – alas almost nothing from the Napoleonic time period. There was one print of some Austrian generals watching a battle – that's about it. There are probably more – but it might take searching for a specific battle or artist. I think an artist named Ottinger (?) did a lot of Austrian Army pictures. Good luck!

jcooley02 Apr 2014 7:50 p.m. PST

I think the Austrian artist's name you were referring to is Ottenfeld.

There are some very cool paintings from the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 by various artists (Ottenfeld, Anton Hoffman, Carl Rochling, etc…). I'm not sure where to find prints of them to purchase however.

Kind regards,
Jon
