Over at elenderilsblog.blogspot.co.uk I have posted a tutorial for making model trees from the cones from Alder trees. The results look like this

. I hope you find it useful.

Wouldn't an Adler tree be nice. You could try planting a figure in a pot I suppose! :-)

Really nice idea! I have seen these a few times but never thought of repurposing them for trees in 6mm. Thanks a lot for the cleverness!

While I would like to take credit a couple of other contributors on here came up with the idea first. I just created the walk through.

Making a forest full is time consuming--what else
I start with wire, some is already wrapped in a brown/tan paper, from an art store(hobby shops are oh so limited in this--and the tree models the architects use are so expensive) Sculpy--a modeling clay that you can easily bake into a solid, and the tree stuff--I use thick yard for the palm trees--remember this is 6mm
stick the unpainted wire into the unbaked clay, if necessary wrap the wire with clay to increase the trunk size, bake according to instructions--don't over bake--let cool, paint base and tree trunk, add/glue tree material(lichen, colored sponge material whatever
Usually I do two or three trees per stand as they are to represent forested areas
One other item I use canvas sheets, painted brown, with roads and forested areas and contours painted on, and these sheets are "geomorphic, and the back of the canvas is used also, so multiple terrains can be done with the canvas--better that the green cloth, the string used to mark areas, the tape for roads
and transportable to any con--just use an artists portfolio bag carry
I use this for the 6mm--can be done for other scales
