Nestled in one of the many valleys at the head of the Nekar river, in the Black Forest of Germany, lies a restored moated castle dating from 1100s. Shots from a visit last week and a visit to the Mauser Army museum can be found here: smallwargaming.blogspot.de A short time ago, there was a thread on the way drums are strung (the way the drum heads remained in place with cords resembling a "Y" shape in rigging. I have added to that discussion with pictures,on the blog as well. Did you know that Mauser made cars at one time? I sure didn't! Hope you enjoy the visual trip! Tom Dye |

Thanks, Rob. There are scores of castles around here in southern Germany. This one is pretty obscure, but worth the effort to get to it! Makes me want to look at some catalog pictures (like Perry figs) again for the period. |

Tom, When I was in the army, I was stationed in Schwabisch Gmund, so spent many happy hours in Stuttgart sowing wild oats. If you haven't already been, it's worth the trip to get down to Hohenzollern Castle: link The family was actually from the area to begin with before becoming Prussia's royals. Wish I had spent more time chasing history while I was there, but the beer just tasted too good! Bob |

Hi, Bob. The Hohenzollern Family and castle is on my bucket list! It's only about an hour and a half away. Would have gone this weekend (weather is awesomely good!) but had errands to do at Patch and Panzer. Maybe next weekend! Drove past it last weekend. You would not recognize this area these days. A lot of the posts have closed. Still, great area for us history nuts! Bitte, Jurgenation! Tom |

Thanks for posting all those great photos. It brings back many memories of my five year posting in the Black Forest in the early 80s. |

Thanks Paul and IronDuke596. Didn't get a chance to serve in Europe during my 20 years in the USAF (always sent me to the other side of the world). It took me 18 years and having to sign up for the civil service to get a chance to serve in Europe! Wish I had been stationed here in the 80's, when the footprint was larger! (More gamers here then I suspect!) |
