Would a de-bolshevik system and trying the leaders of the Soviet Union for Genocide and ethnic cleansing, as well as waging aggressive war have been effective in preventing the Current Expansive attempts to Reconstruct the Soviet Empire?

Who would hold the trials and where? Can't have Foreigners doing it, and it would be political suicide to do it where people still revere Stalin. Putin did not rise to the top by pure chance. He was backed by a large portion of the populace who knew just what he was and were fine with it.

Very few nations will embrace shame.

Rubber Suit Theatre29 Mar 2014 8:13 p.m. PST

Considering that the old Soviet system of succession was "You can be Premier over my dead body, Comrade"; I'm not sure who would have been around for trials by that date.

captain canada29 Mar 2014 8:17 p.m. PST

But John we do today, at the Hague.

And there were camp commanders, police, apparatchiks and civil servants.

chriskrum29 Mar 2014 8:50 p.m. PST

If something had been done to someone who might have done something, might that have stopped someone currently from doing something that isn't actually happening?

Why don't you bring this up a year from now when there still isn't a reborn Soviet Union and there's been no invasion of Estonia or Poland or Germany or whatever other hysterical, the sky is falling, claim is currently in vogue. It'll make exactly as much sense as it does now.

Meanwhile back in reality…

captain canada29 Mar 2014 8:57 p.m. PST

?.

I don't see a reborn Soviet Union. I don't understand your comment.

"Current Expansive attempts to Reconstruct the Soviet Union"

Love the use of caps, makes it look like it's actually a thing instead of a delusion.

captain canada29 Mar 2014 9:01 p.m. PST

The quote is wrong.

chriskrum29 Mar 2014 9:07 p.m. PST

"Soviet Empire," my bad.

It's still utterly and completely stupid. You must've slept through everything that happened between 1989 and now if you think there's a link between not "de-bolshevik" [-ing] Russia and what is happening now.

captain canada29 Mar 2014 9:09 p.m. PST

So there was no annexation. Good news.

Cosmic Reset29 Mar 2014 9:36 p.m. PST

A trial of which Soviet leaders? When?

John the OFM30 Mar 2014 6:33 a.m. PST

But John we do today, at the Hague.

Yes. Rwanda, Serbia, Liberia, Lower Slobbovia…
All major powers.
Germans? A DEFEATED country that was willing to admit shame, and you will not find many of those. Even then, it was not easy.
What are the odds of a warrant from the Hague being served on some aparatchik in charge of some minor aspect that killed thousands in the Holodomor? (Speaking of Ukraine…)

Only the unlucky criminals of a defeated regime go to the Hague.
Only in the dreams of right wing loons like myself was the Soviet Union defeated. It disintegrated. Huge difference.
Were they "guilty"? Oh, yeah. So what? WHO would have, or could have gone in to Russia to arrest and try the "guilty"?

Tgunner30 Mar 2014 6:53 a.m. PST

And who were the guilty? Stalin? Dead. Lenin? Where's the proof? I'm a right winger, a left-handed one granted, who would be happy to see a lot of them "strung up" as the saying goes back home. But that is unrealistic. The USSR fell on its own, not because we Dreadnoughts put Dreadnought 6 in front of the Kremlin and told them to come out or else.. and thank God for that too.

It's in the past, so let's deal with the now. And you don't think Putin is rebuilding the old Soviet Union… then please be careful before you go driving today because the stuff your drinking/smoking is clearly affecting your judgement more than you think.

And now a word or two from my three year old daughter, Shelby:

Evidently she had some choice "words" for you guys! That's what I get for leaving my pad for a minute. But on the other hand she' s probably as coherent on this subject as the rest of us are.

captain canada30 Mar 2014 10:09 a.m. PST

She makes some strong points.
