Hey, Fellow Gamers!

It's that time of year, again! The holidays are behind us, the days are slowly getting longer and our minds are awhirl with all manner of thoughts as to what we need to do to get ready. Get ready for what, you ask? Why, ready for our favorite gaming show, of course! Nashcon! And it's right around the corner…..May 23rd through the 25th at the Cool Springs Marriott in Franklin Tennessee, just south of Nashville on I-40.

This also means it's time for me to start my annual big game hunt. No, no, no…..not Elephants or Rhino's! I'm in charge of event scheduling for the show so I'll be hunting for those big games of WWII armor and ACW charges, Napoleonic cavalry skirmishing and Zulu amabutho advancing on British regulars, of ancient or medieval or renaissance warriors arrayed for battle in all their splendor and maybe even some Zombies or Starships thrown in for good measure.

But more importantly, I'll be hunting for game masters who'll be willing to step up and run those big games! And I know you're out there…..nestled amongst your piles of reference books and bags of static grass, quietly putting the final touches on your morale charts or getting the color just right on those tunics. Well, the time has come to show the gaming community just what you've got! We've started taking event submissions for Nashcon 2014.

If you're interested in running a game at Nashcon this year, you can contact me at:

bryant.t.williams@gmail.com

I'll send you all the information and answer any questions you may have about the show. Or, you can visit the HMGS Mid-South web site….. link sign up there. However you want to do it, just remember that game slots are issued on a first come, first served basis. To make sure you get the schedule you want, try to get those submissions in as soon as possible. Come join us at Nashcon this year. We just know you'll have a big ol' time!

The HAWKs have been putting the final touches on our schedule this weekend. Looks like thirteen games this year.

We're looking forward to it!

This year is the 160th anniversary of the Battle of Balaclava. The game scenario represents the battle using the Charge of the Light Brigade Rules. Each side starts out in historically accurate positions – including Lord Cardigan, who is asleep on his yacht in Balaclava harbor. The organization of the various units is as outlined in the Rules in that battalions are represented by six 4-man stands, cavalry by six 2-man stands and a battery with three model guns and six figures.

The Nashcon wargame convention in Nashville, Tennessee, to be held in May, will be the first public appearance of this grand scenario in a decade. We will have a field six feet wide by twenty-four feet in length to represent the main battlefield and Balaclava harbor and several ships at anchor. Over a thousand 28 millimeter troops will be available for the game.

This will run Friday evening. Here is the scenario and the rules:

'Forward, the Light Brigade!'
Was there a man dismay'd?
Not tho' the soldiers knew
  Some one had blunder'd:
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die:
Into the valley of Death
  Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
  Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
  Rode the six hundred.

As part of the HAWKs offering I'll be doing Andrew Jackson's attack on the British camp below New Orleans as depicted here link.

I'll be using Wellington Rules with mode for night fighting.
