I was in the Metropolitan Museum of Art today. They have an exhibit of the Old West in Bronze, which also includes some paintings. Remington's work is top of the line though there are some other good ones too. Anyway, I saw a sculpture and a painting of US cavalry in combat. Many of the hats were folded about the crown like Montana hats but with brims up in front, etc. None of those suspenders so beloved of Hollywood cavalry. What they were wearing was brown leather carbine belts, with carbines attached. One trooper so equipped was being pulled up by another trooper. The trooper on foot had lost his horse.

Both artists were working with actual troopers as models. If you're in NYC, worth the visit. Plus Messonier's 1807 Friedland painting is on the second floor. And the Armor collection is on one…

If your ever in Cody /Wyoming,they have the Winchester museum, with remingtons actual art studio in the museum. It was the director"John Ford",who used the suspenders heavily in westerns. He knew it was wrong but said they look too cool,no to use.I'll forgive him this one.His movies were too cool. The cavalry hats were so poorly made they fell apart on campaign ,many cavalryman purchased there own hats ,many of Custers men before' Little Bighorn",purchased strawhats to keep cooler.Remington paintings are timeless.

Charles Schreyvogel's paintings of cavalry and of Native
Americans are timeless as well.

The interesting thing is that most of his Western paintings
were done in Hoboken, NJ, where he lived. Many of them on
the rooftop of the apartment building where he lived.

The non-Remington painting was by Schreyvogel – I could not remember his name.
