I've been interested in an easy to learn, play, and remember set of naval rules that do not involve enrolling in the naval academy. I've rules out Mongoose's game for the moment because a revised edition is supposedly on the way one of these days. I've been thinking of the Naval Thunder rules for WWI naval, but my jury is still out on it.

This evening I stumbled on Challenge & Reply II. I've never heard of it. Anyone have any experience with it or the first version? Online PDF rule shops have it for $8 USD here in the US. The rules are from the UK. The website simply provides a table of contents, which helps me little.

How does it compare to other WWI naval rules?

A very simple to play yet fun game. The results are good too so you can't really go wrong unless you enjoy very detailed and complex rules.

Rules are not quite as streamlined as their WWII game All at Sea but similar enough. Here is a link to an aar of All at Sea to give an idea of play

Can't recommend WTJ's Free Quickfire rules enough.
Everyone I've taught it to barely needs the QRS by turn three.

The rules are elegant, orthogonal and really fit easily "into your head" producing a good result with appropriate chrome.
