I have some soft plastic 1:72 figures to prime. My favorite primer for metal miniatures is Dupli-Color sandable primer. Would this work on soft plastic figures, or would it react badly with the soft plastic? This is my first foray into painting soft plastic. I have some figures from Caesar and would like to get more from other manufacturers.

Take some of the plastic sprue and spray it. That will tell you all you need to know.

Unfortunately, Caesar doesn't have any sprues. They cut off the figure from the sprue before they package them.

I don't think anything will have a negative impact on that soft plastic that they use. But if you must tested do it on the bottom of a figured bass that's a nice surface.

THAT, is unfortunate!

I tried Dupli-Color plastic primer on some HaT figures (so quite soft plastic) a couple of times and the results were very poor. There was no damage to the plastic, it simply didnīt work well at all. When I tried painting the figures the paint behaved as if there were no primer there at all.
But I have no experience with sandable primer, so perhaps your results will be better than mine.

There have got to be a couple useless poses on the box, that has been the way with every set of 1/72 plastics I ever bought. Test it out on those.

I'll try a test shot on a useless pose. I never thought of doing that. Thanks for the tip.

I use Artist's Gesso for primer; it is available in white, gray, or black (there is a clear version, but it is not useful for miniatures). It is a brush-on, but it works well. It is available at any art supply store. Cheers!
