Did the Ratings carry muskets or were they armed with cutlass and pistol. I read an account of boarding pikes being used. Were weapons issued in certain percentages per landing party? Thanks, Andrew |

Did the Ratings carry muskets or were they armed with cutlass and pistol. Either or both depending on what was available. |

A boarding party would be armed with a mix of cutlass and pistol which would be more useful for the short range melee. A landing party would primarily be armed with muskets (and bayonets) to give them more ranged firepower though cutlasses would probably still be carried. |

In 1810, the British captured Banda in the Dutch Spice Islands armed primarily with boarding pikes, as muskets were thought to be too unreliable in tropic humidity. link |
