For golden age of Piracy all the way to Modern times …

For those seeking a quick and cheap alternatives, check out these templates:

Also …

I imagine they could be used to make balsa or styrene ones, and not just paper and card stock. Not sure if scale is really an issue with the overall hull designs.

Enjoy, and PLEASE let us see what you make from those templates!

Thank you so much for these!

Not sure if this can be used or not. I leave it to you guys to find out:

PS. There are also some interesting wooden incense burners that could be turned into hulls. Here's an example:

War In 15MM27 Mar 2014 4:12 p.m. PST

When Disney released the third Pirates of the Caribbean (At World's End), it marketed a plastic pirate junk that is suitable for use with 15s.

Cacique Caribe27 Mar 2014 7:55 p.m. PST

Yep. Nice ones too! I got two of those a while back.

I use those paper models as plans, and work with water soaked balsa (it will bend and retain shape after drying) or thin styrene sheet to make ships.

Yeppers, War in 15, that Disney toy junk was a real beauty! Sold in Wal Marts, I recall.

May I call attention to the 25mm and 15mm card models ( as PDF's ) which are part of the "Send A Gunboat!" line of models designed by Richard Houston and sold by TVAG.

Follow this link to see photos and get details.

And don't let the page fool you! There are two types of Junks, and BOTH in 15mm as well as 25mm.

For scratchbuilt junks you should certainly view this spectacular page (now only on Archive)

Or you can buy them ready made from Merrimack Shipyards via Old Glory 25s, they have two different (at least) junks in 15 mm:

Or five, it seems. I have two bought many years ago that were a little different so explore there ranges, there might be more than are in that immediate link above.

And there's a close-to-scale plastic kit in a range of boats by Lindbergh that also includes a Burmese River Pirate vessel and an Arab dow.

CC,

A junk is real easy to make.

Here it is, in an AAR;

and the WIP;

And there are some paper Sampan kits over on RPGNow

as for an Arab Dhow, this looks promising;

But I think a Dhow would be easy to scratch build like I did the Junk.

BTW, if anyone wants to make a floating, RC controlled, powered version, let me know! I will tell you how! :)

I did a test run with a 28mm barge, that was powered by a cheap battery and torpedo with prop under the hull, with a servo conrolled rudder.

You couldn't adjust speed, but you could steer it and take it out on the lake.

Of course, you can use an ESC and real motor, and have adjustable speed, reverse, etc just as easy.

Or go brushless motor, and have a 60+ MPH junk! :)

Amalric,

Those look stunning! I can't stop looking at those pics.

Thank you so much for sharing.

This paper junk on a Russian craft site looks interesting but half the parts seem to be missing…

For those of us with no aptitude for paper or foam board, there's always adapting some handy 3D wood puzzle kits of ancient Chinese ships:

By using fewer masts and replacing the steps on deck with ones better proportioned for 28mm figures (or 15mm depending upon your preferences), this particular kit transforms into a fetching war junk:

And another:

I'm not sure of the scale of each of the boats, however the second one I linked to I have one built and three more waiting, and as I've been meaning to do a photo shoot of my Taiping Rebellion Chinese army, as soon as the junk is done I'll post pix on my blog. I found that the simple expedient of leaving off all but three of the largest masts gave me a very nice basic war junk scaled for 28mm Foundry Taiping Rebellion Chinese, so there *is* a relatively inexpensive and robust wooden model out there for those who prefer something less fiddly than paper models (or like me, just not computer savvy enough to make the print and build approach viable!).

Hope this helps!

Nice boats!!!

And yes, if the size of the hull is right, the overall scale of the model ship may not be a major issue.
