Last night I finished the preliminary layout for the new edition of On To Richmond! Excited that we should have these back available for gamers soon! The new edition is a re-write, aiming to make the rules clearer, including numerous examples and diagrams which the old rules lacked. It incorporates all of the errata, clarifications etc. that appeared in The Courier over the years. The new book will be digest sized, running 80 pages, in full color. Besides the rules (which are reasonably brief) also included are: - Numerous optional rules for Prone Units, Gatling Guns, Building Works, Artillery Morale, and much, much more.
- An alternative Morale System that makes Division Commanders much more influential.
- Four scenarios, two fictional/generic and two loosely historical battles (Glendale and Cross Keys/Port Republic).
- The Campaign System
- An article on tactical tips and hints.
- Brief variants for Napoleonics and the Franco Prussian War (the rules were originally designed for the FPW!).
Based on the new length and specs we anticipate a selling price of $25 USD for the printed book. We will also be producing a printer-friendly PDF version. It will have the same content except that the diagrams will be changed from color photos to B&W and reduced in size. It will print on standard letter paper. The PDF will be priced at $20 USD and will be available for immediate download from FlagshipGames.com once available. A one sheet QRS will be included. The QRS will be available for download as well. The charts also appear in the rule book proper, just in case you don't have a QRS handy, or lose yours. Finally, a QRS/Chart Adapter will also be included. OTR! uses bases 2" wide. This adapter will allow you to print a custom QRS based on your stand width. So if your bases are 40mm/4cm wide, just drop "4" in the spreadsheet and it will calculate movement rates, weapon ranges, etc. all keyed to your particular base width. Works with either Imperial or Metric measurements. Example: standard line movement in OTR! is 6" or 3 base widths. If you use 4cm bases it will show movement as 12cm! No need to do the maths in your head! |

Great. Excellent set of rules, long out of print. Can be used for any conflict of the late horse/musket period. Dan |

Can be used for any conflict of the late horse/musket period. I think it could be used for most Horse and Musket conflicts with some minor modifications. It is a high level scale (1 Unit is a brigade) so must of the minutiae is abstracted out. Love this game! |

I have never heard of these rules before. Any link that talks about the game a bit more? How are turns handled and bases for units and such? Thanks, Matthew |

Are you going to consider making a PDF/Hardcopy combo available (similar to Two Hour Wargames)? |
JimDuncanUK | 27 Mar 2014 8:35 a.m. PST |
@45thdiv I played these rules more than 20 years ago, they're great! link |

Matthew, It's Fire 'n Fury before there was Fire n' Fury. Card driven activation. 10 sided die to resolve most tasks. Morale is a percentage die instead. Stand removal. The the review in the link Jim posted was written by a gaming genius. John |

I look forward to seeing a cleaned up version that provides a little more clarity. I commend you on taking the risk to get this nice old set of rules back on the market. |

@45th: The nice thing about these rules is that the number of figs on a stand does not matter, and you can use whatever basing you already use. I played a game a few months ago using my 3" x 3" Volley and Bayonet stands, and we played it years ago using our 1" x 3/4" stands. |

One of the good things about OTR, which I played many, many years ago when the rules were printed in The Courier, was that you can vary the strength of your brigades by adding or subtracting stands. Jim |

I really like the idea of the QRS/Chart Adapter. Good addition to any ruleset. |

Wow
I still cheerish my original copy and used it to introduce my boys to ACW gaming a couple of years ago. At that time I also found a couple of revised editions on the Web which scaled it down to regimental. We have since moved on to RFF, but will eagerly get a copy of this once released. |

I remember there were versions for the Crimea and several other 19th century wars if I remember right. Are these going to be in the rulebook. |
Extra Crispy | 27 Mar 2014 4:32 p.m. PST |
Only Napoleonics and FPW are included. There are loads of variants but I have not managed to track those down

Will I be able to get a hardcopy sent to Australia? |

Hello Extra Crispy – the Crimean variant of OTR can be found in The Courier Volume VI, No 6 "On to Sevastapol!" by Paul Koch Page 60. |

Terrific news Mark. I can hardly wait to get my hands on a copy. |

Ca I still use my old printed edition from back in the previous century, or will the Gods of the Proper Edition smite me down? |
langobard | 28 Mar 2014 2:58 a.m. PST |
Can't wait for this, in almost 40 years of gaming, these are the only rules I ever played that were so good they got me into a period that I previously had no interest in. An all time classic! So glad it will soon resume its proper place in the wargames world: being in print! |
EagleSixFive | 28 Mar 2014 5:44 a.m. PST |
Yay! We still play them regularly, have done since the mid 80's. Our poor old copies will finally get a well earned rest! |
Extra Crispy | 28 Mar 2014 6:34 a.m. PST |
@Demosthenes: Yes, hard copies to Australia will be no problem. I'll be looking for an Australian dealer in fact as postage from the US has gotten fairly steep. @John the OFM Provided your personal license fee is paid in full, no problem. Otherwise some nice gentlemen in a black helicopter will come by to explain your, uh, "options." Best if you don't make any sudden moves around them. Note: The PDF will have BOTH the full color just like the book, or a printer friendly all B&W with line diagrams for printing. The B&W pretty much be just text with some diagrams, with the little bit of eye-candy left off. |

Glad the project is almost finished. As some here know, I like these rules so much (the originals) that I sent 200 + sets out for free to anyone who asked. Mark, lemme know when and where to send the $$ for the new version ! |

Great news Mark! I have the Ancients variant that was in the Courier around here somewhere. I can scan it and e-mail it to you if you want. |

Does anybody have any scenario OOBs for OTR? I don't have the old ruleset, and I'm anxiously awaiting the new version. In the meantime, I'd like to get painting. But other than 6-10 stands per infantry brigade, I don't know what I need to buy and paint! |
Extra Crispy | 12 Apr 2014 5:57 p.m. PST |
@Brian: The biggest scenario included with the rules requires 5 divisions of 3 brigades each. Plus some one or two cavalry brigades per side. Assume three batteries for every two divisions. |
Brian Bronson | 13 Apr 2014 4:43 a.m. PST |
Thank you for the info. Are cav brigades also 6-10 stands each? Are batteries a single stand? |
