I went to see this tonight. I wasn't sure what to expect given that it was going to be a one person interpretation of the Iliad and other Geek myths according to the blurb. It was actually quite good. More of a dramatic telling of the story than a play. Not really a play at all. For me it was a bit of a waste of time in some ways. I know the story pretty well and the dramatic recitation tended too far to being an anti-war polemic to be all that interesting. Still the actor did a good job with what he had to work with and the details in it were well done. At one part he recites a list of wars and repeats quite a few and puts a number of others out of order. I think Cromwell invaded Ireland about four times. Two of them prior to the War of the Roses according to the list. I almost bought a copy of the script at the end to see if it was written like that or if the actor just couldn't remember. I will recommend it to my friends that have only a passing acquaintance with the story. It was entertaining for me but I think I would not go to see it again. Still I'm glad I went if only to help support Greek themed theater at the local playhouse. |
