Tom Cruise Respawns Into Alien War in New Edge of Tomorrow Trailer

"There are probably better ways to be reborn than having Emily Blunt shoot you in the face, but none of them seem nearly as cool. Want proof? Look above.

The new trailer for director Doug Liman's Edge of Tomorrow takes us a little bit further into his Groundhog Day-meets-Call of Duty sci-fi epic in which Tom Cruise plays Lt. Col. Bill Cage—a man fighting an alien war on a loop where he dies only to wake up and fight the same battle again and again. How and why he gets stuck in this constant respawn cycle is a bit unclear, but apparently the way to get out is to be trained by special forces hero named Rita Vrataski (Blunt), who—again—might just off Cage in order to get him to come back in better shape than the one she's left him in.

Seen this twice now, first in 2d, then today in glorious 3D-a-vision and enjoyed it even more, surprised no else on the board is talking about it… anyway not normally a fan of 3D but this is an exception… highly recommended.

Seen it twice, 2 days in a row and both 2D.
Amazeballs, one of the best scifi films made in the last decade or so.

Hazza try it in 3D, going to try and get to the cinema again before it goes. It's a shame it does seem to have found the audience it deserves….

I mean who wants to a see near future combat movie? which has action, humour and nice plot twists? I think it'll be like Dredd and do solid disc sales, hope so anyway.

It looks interesting to me but my wife HATES 'Groundhog Day' style movies with a fiery passion, so that's the end of that lol. Besides, there are plenty of other movies out now or coming soon that we both really do want to see so I'll probably wait for the Blu-Ray.

Must admit I liked Source Code as well…if she doesn't know, don't say and plead ignorance after…. what's the worst that could happen… you can always blame me… some dude in the UK ;)

And it placed third behind "Malificent" and "The Fault in Our Stars".

Lardie the Great11 Jun 2014 2:19 p.m. PST

My wife and youngest say Malificent is very good, but I'm gobsmacked that nobody here or on frothers is talking about it. It's still on at the local cinema, so going at the weekend.

I just posted reviews of both EoT and Maleficent on my movie blog here: link

Lardie the Great12 Jun 2014 1:43 p.m. PST

Good reviews, I liked A million ways to die in the west too and I think that's been a big problem… a glut of big budget films, all within afew weeks and the cinema isn't cheap, so something has to give.

I really liked EoT, and I'm difficult to please.

OK, sort of "Groundhog Day" meets "Starship Troopers", but the acting was good, the premise was (mostly) good, the equipment was good, and the whole thing came off well.

Only a minor complaint: the film was weak on military details: Tom Cruise, and other military members, had longer hair than would be acceptable in any army, they didn't greet each other by saluting (corporal greets a major arriving by helicopter with a handshake), and the internal dynamics of an infantry squad were a cliche of every bootcamp movie you've seen.

But other than that, really a lot of fun. And some great ideas for sci-fi mini gaming.

Agreed; went to see this on Sunday as a Father's Day treat to myself and REALLY enjoyed it. Lot of fun all round.

I thought it would have been a better ending if it had ended five minutes early, as the science fictional premise was kinda broken by the last scene. But hardly a deal breaker-- still a very good action movie with nice bits of comedy and drama mixed in (and the SF is cool until it stops making sense).

Lardie the Great25 Sep 2014 1:24 p.m. PST

Just got my bluray (ordered from the states) so you lot have no excuse not to watch it….

I can give a valid reason for the last scene, but it would have spoilers in it.

chromedog01 Oct 2014 4:49 a.m. PST

Was only out for a couple of weeks at the cineplex and I didn't have time to find it (and only one 3d cinema in my area that's a bitch to get parking for).

I'll catch it on cable (how I usually do).
I can do without 3d. I can do without HD (my eyes aren't HD compliant at the best of times).

I'm coming late to this party because I've just watched this on DVD; an entertaining bit of hokum if you overlook the militarily illogical background.

In his desire to do an SF D-Day the producer seems not to have understood the simple fact that the Allies landed on beaches because they were transported on ships across a stretch of sea.

The historical analogy to his drop-troopers is of course paratroopers, who were not earthbound and were able to land anywhere. If somehow the Allies had had the capacity to air-drop the entire D-Day invasion force would they have chosen to land in the sea in front of the main enemy defences? Silly – very silly.
