"Nobody knows exactly how many people have perished in Boko Haram's insurgency in northeastern Nigeria. The Council of Foreign Relations estimates that more than 8,500 individuals have died since May 2011—killed by the terror group itself or in government crack-downs. The government had stepped up its campaign against Boko Haram in the past couple years, but that hasn't reduced the death rate. The government seems to realize that a purely military approach isn't working. In mid-March, Nigerian National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki announced a new strategy that he called the "soft approach," meant to address the root causes of the insurgency

I think it is too late for the soft approach as it has now spread to Niger and Cameroon.I understand wanting to get to the root of the problem but as long as Lagos is a country away from the problem, and corruption rampant, things won't change, they have even asked france for help.Boko haram is turned into nothing but a bunch of enslaving thugs ,whose ideals of helping the impoverished has turned into murdering the innocents. It is time for the hammer. |

From what I've read of history, the soft touch never works, except for aiding the bad guys. As Legion 4 mentions, give no quarter, since they won't with you. |
tuscaloosa | 28 Mar 2014 4:17 a.m. PST |
That would be fine, except the Nigerian security force's version of the hammer so far is slaughtering villages full of people who have nothing to do with Boko Haram. That's not going to solve the problem. |
Legion 4 | 06 May 2014 7:11 a.m. PST |
Well
if you thought these guys were not bad enough, I'm sure you saw on the news
they kidnapped almost 300 young females from a girls' school in Nigeria. And their leader vowed to sell them as slaves as Allah directs in the Koran
I'm speechless, and trying not to sounds critical of islam
or more accurately islmamists
won't say any more, as I may come off being less than PC
or even racists
And I'm not racist
just amazed at what still goes on in the 21st Century
in the name of a religion
or any other [corrupted ?] dogma for that matter
But we are all humans and history shows it's the nature of the "beast"
us

With that type of thinking thru out much of the moslem world
we see around the globe what problems this causes. Kidnappings, bombings, etc., etc. And the only ones that can "fix" it is the majority (hopefully) of moslems that don't think like that
Believe me, based on my experiences in the Darien, knowlegde of history, etc., they are going to have a hard time tracking them down. For a number of reasons
I hope for the best
And hope some day the rest of the moslem world will take responsiblity of there misguided brethern

The BBC security correspondent thinks the best chance the girls have is for other Islamic fundies to tell BH is stop being so stupid because they're not helping the cause. Main problem might be that given the history of Nigeria's army interfering with local politics, it's been run down and starved of funds. But it's a big area with few people living in it – and its not like Niger and Cameroon are strong states either. Plenty of places to hide. |
Legion 4 | 10 May 2014 8:17 a.m. PST |
I certainly think other islamic countries and islamic religious leaders must get involved
as you said, convince BH that it must stop being morons and they are not helping their cause
whatever that is ? But will AQ and other jihadists/islamists agree or disagree with what BH is doing ? If they have AQ support, et al, they may just ignore anything other moslem leader, etc. say ? No easy answers, when it comes to islamic fanatics
|
Legion 4 | 11 May 2014 7:26 a.m. PST |
CNN said today the top religious leader in Saudi Arabia spoke out and condemned what BH has done and is doing
Again, don't think this will have much of an effect, BH are thugs hidding behind, among other things, islam. They are mostly from Northern Nigeria and that region, it is reported, has be poorly treated and handled by the weak Nigerian government and leadership. So being islamic fanatics is just one of BHs "causes" it seems
Like many situations in that region and others with significant moslem populations
it's complicated
or as they

What is the current deployed troop mix that the US is sending to Nigeria? |
Legion 4 | 12 May 2014 12:30 p.m. PST |
From what I heard, maybe a dozen or so "trainer" types. Probably SF
Plus a handful non-military types from the FBI, hostage negotiators, crisis/rape councillors, etc.
at least that is the "official word", so far
|
Legion 4 | 13 May 2014 6:52 a.m. PST |
Just saw on CNN, about 30 US individuals on the ground in Nigeria. A mix of FBI, civilian LEOs, Military, etc.
And the US is flying recon flights as well, to try to find the hostages and BH
so we'll see

Unsecured Libyan Weapons Went to Boko Haram The Bama attack showed their [Boko Haram's] substantial firepower, including machine guns, large numbers of rocket propelled grenades (RPGs) and pick-up trucks mounted with anti-aircraft guns, a sign the weapons flood from the Libyan war that helped rebels seize parts of Mali last year has reached Nigeria, officials say. link |

Why Boko Haram Might Be Impossible to Stop. "The Nigerian government blinked today in its standoff with Boko Haram, agreeing to talks with the group in an effort to get back 276 schoolgirls who were kidnapped in northern Nigeria three weeks ago. It's another sign of weakness by the Nigerian government. So far, the government and the military have appeared feckless, unable to locate the girls in the short-term and powerless to stop the rise of the group over the last 4 years. The reason the group is so difficult to stop is simple: its members simply have nothing to lose

The Nigerians can't do it in battle
Just as the US/NATO is leaving Afghanistan regardless how many AQ, Jihadists, Taliban were killed
in the short term in the 'stan all that can be done is attition/elimination of the enemy in large numbers. And keeping your losses as close to 0 as possible. Drones, CAS, etc.,
