Kronoscaf has little to offer here, so anyone know if NCO's were armed with muskets or some kind of pole arm like the line infantry? Also musicians – I'm assuming drummers like everyone else, but what about fifers or, being light troops, bugle horns |

I have the Osprey MAA 413 "Austrian frontier troops, 1740-98" which is based on reliable sources like Wrede and Vaniceck. Indeed there are more or less no informations before the end of SYW, when the uniforms were better regulated. What I was able to find is the following: NCO-Armed with the Kurzgehewer (i.e. a partizan), an Hazelstock cane and a cheaper version of the officer coat. Officier- dressed more or less like their Hungarian colleagues After 1764 the drummer uniform was regulated (so I can guess that they take for granted was already in use): regimental drummers dressed in a style chosen by each regiments, the reversed color practice widely used. Battalion drummers and fifers dressed like the privates without facing colors on the cuffs and swallow nest in facing color with black/yellow lace. However it seems that the situation varied a lot, depending on the wealthiness of the Grenz area. Still in 1769 the old syw uniforms were used. No mention is made of buglers.
Those are my 5 cents Fabrizio |
