Back 25+ years ago when I only did RPG's, I would always use music for atmosphere. Like soundtracks to Conan and such. But with technology today it seems easy to have sound effects for in-game action. I find a KS campaign for sound effects: link Have you ever used them? Does it get to be a bother to find the right track in the middle of a fight? Xin |

I got Wes' first SFX KS and really like them. Lots of good ambient background loops that work for many settings, some that layer well also. E.g., I may have "Summer Day in the Forest" playing at a modest level, and then trigger "Thunderstorm" or "Medieval Battle" at a (preset) slightly higher volume to layer over it as appropriate. The trick is making sure you are comfortable using them. If it's not seamless, it's distracting, and that's no good. I use an iPad with Ambrosia's Soundboard app. I have the tracks loaded up so things so I know where they are and can stop/start at a touch of a finger. |

Oh, I thought this was going to be a thread about what happens when too many RPGers each too much pizza and bean dip in one night. |

I'm old school and stick with music. Youtube is a gold mine. 2 hours and 56 minutes of Game of Thrones, oh yeah. |

I just use videogame' soundtracks both for ambience music and for the fx sounds. Just get the sounds effect's library from the videogame. It works both for rpgs and wargames. |

I've never used it myself. Our Earthdawn GM did once play some specific theme music during a climactic battle but the effect put me off. Outside of that I've never seen anyone use recorded sounds. |

I only tried using once, players got too wrapped up in listening to the music

Had never used them before DMing my son and his group during one session – they were charging a docked ships gangplank and knocking some of the sailors/watch overboard instead of killing them, and while the action was happening, my son found a "splash" sound on his cell phone and was "accenting" the action. Ever since then. I located apps for my phone that have sounds to use once in a while. Arrow shots, sword swings, tavern noise, etc. As far as music, again, my son. He locates something suitable (he is faaaaar more classical/orchestral music attuned than I since he plans to be a composer.) |

I never attended one of her games, but when I worked in a game store back in the '80s I kept hearing about a GM in Salinas, California. She lived in a large Victorian house and ran a "Call of Cthulhu" campaign. She ran her games at night and would kill all of the power to the house (so there wasn't even the 60-cycle "hum" in the walls). Her game was set in the dining room (remember it is a Victorian home) by candle light . . . which flickered because she'd leave some windows open in other parts of the house to create drafts. Now for the sounds . . . she had a number of battery-operated cassette players set in various rooms . . . they were mostly silent but had occasional "moans" and "screams" and "rattling chains" and other odd sounds which would show up from time to time. From all of the accounts of her players who would tell me stories, she really scared the stuffing* out of them. Now that is what I'd call a great use of sound in an RPG. -- Jeff
