Using TSATF rules for winning a VC, I have yet to get one. I have gotten a lot of units killed trying, but I want someone in my damn 24th Regiment to get a VC! (I want that +3 melee bonus for future games) Better yet, an officer, so he gets a +4 melee! Question, should I keep a straight face when I do get a VC in games against my GF, and use him in "real games"? :) |

I came close in a game once. Missed the die roll by THAT much. So I gave Lt Ian Hamilton of the Gordon Highlanders the DSO instead, AND mentioned him in despatches. He keeps getting himself killed after that, though. |

Came close once, about 20 years ago. I had already been playing for close to 10 years at that point. Haven't been close since. Rick |

Nope, but I've had a few Natives who'd have won the equivalent
And one cavalry subaltern I was seriously trying to shoot with the gatling gun. Lucky for him, the Natives got him. |

Soooooo
is it gonna look suspicious if Smokey shows up with a unit with a couple VCs? |

You'll need to write them up well (come on, you're a lawyer, tell me a story time is what you do
) |

I painted one of my figures a VC. It was a flagcarrier of a welch regiment. The flag was made from steelwire and when my opponet tried to grab him he hurt his hand very badly at the sharpend end of the flag. He was bleeding so badly that he could not move troops with this hand for that day. The welch regiment survived the day due to the fact that the enemy came in lesser numbers
The tin soldier who has taken out a enemy player earns a VC in my book and so i painted it on him. Greetings and have fun

Only mentioned in despatches, sadly. |

LOL JJ! :) OK, question. Just say somehow Smokey comes up with a VC bearer in one of his units, is he a key figure?
If he is considered a key figure, he won't last long enough to get into a melee and enjoy +3. :( |

They all get eaten by bugs, so any results would be posthumous |

Terrement, outstanding sir! Smokey, he would be most definitely be considered as a key figure, and yes, I'd target him first with any key fig casualty card. I came close twice. Once during a game Tom put on at Hcon about 10 years ago in one of the Colonial Wars Rooms. The scenario was the prisoner from the TSATF scenario pack. My imperial cav unit made its way deep into enemy territory and was searching the vill. We found and liberated the captured officer and were attempting to make our way back to friendly troops. I had split the cav into two 6 man units to search more hootches quicker. Yeah, I know, big mistake. My half units were charged by hidden Ansar units. One was wiped out to a man. The other half unit had a desperate fight with a very determined foe. Imperial troopers and natives dropped like wheat. The melee raged back and forth. Finally it was down to just the officer left vs 3 or 4 remaining Dervish. More dice were thrown, a few more rounds of melee ensued with the Dervish either falling back or becoming casualties. The last round was my mounted officer with his melee bonus vs a lone Dervish tribesman. The talk around the table was assuredly a VC will be awarded for his actions! Alas it was not to be. I threw a 1 and the simple tribesman struck me down dead. The unit was wiped out, the liberated officer recaptured, and my hopes of a VC snuffed out like the lives of the poor cav officer and his men. Huge fun though! I still remember the game to this day. Cheers, JB |

LOL Jeff! Remember that civilian woman I had in that Indian Mutiny game, who defeated a unit of Sepoys with a frying pan? Too bad non regulars can't be considered for the VC :( |
Smokey Roan | 03 Apr 2014 8:07 a.m. PST |
Hey, do you have to tell anyone a guy in a unit has a VC, until melee? Theoretically, units shooting at other units wouldn't know who the VC was until up close, right? That may increase the lifespan of the VC bearer during the firing/casualty phase! (and might decrease the lifespan of the player who throws out "Oh yeah, this dude has a VC, +3 baby!" during melee?) My next unit shall be a platoon of B company of the 24th! (they got re assigned to the Sudan in 1885, I will claim! And it just so happens that Hitch, Williams, Allen, Bourne ad nauseum happen to be in this particlur platoon!) :) :) :)

Smokey, Holy C$&@! I definitely remember that game. It was "Outbreak at Meerut" an Indian Mutiny scenario that Nick Stern had given me that we had run at Recon and Hurricon. You were on the imperial side and had the officers and their families as part of your command. When the Mutiny started the badmashes launch an attack against the officer's residences. You were rolling insane in melee with that woman with her frying pan against the badmash unit who attacked that villa. I think you took out 5 to 6 opponents before loosing the melee. That unit then failed morale since we were using ten man units and it was less than 50% strength. That was an amazingly fun game. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Cheers, JB |

Hey, do you have to tell anyone a guy in a unit has a VC, until melee? As long as you have the VC properly marked on the figure per the rules, them it would be up to your opponent to notice it. And you game in 15mm. Rick |
Smokey Roan | 08 Apr 2014 11:13 a.m. PST |
You'll never guess what happened! During a game at ,my sisters, a unit of mine had TWO VC winners! OK, that won't hold bait! I couldn't even keep a straight face on TMP hidden behind a keyboard!
:( Hey, can a person sell or trade a figure with a VC? (Like a get out of Jail Free card?) I could BUY a figure on EBAY who has a VC, right? As long as the seller double dog swears he is a legitimate bearer of the VC, it holds up in future games, right? (Am I putting too much thought and energy into this concept?) Wait! I could SELL a figure with a VC painted on it, and swear he won it legitimately! Hmmmmmmmmm
(rubbing hands while making "evil plans" face) Time to invest in Bronze Sharpie markers and get to pianting, methinks! |
Smokey Roan | 08 Apr 2014 4:22 p.m. PST |
BTW, what should a "Certificate of Authenticity" look like when selling a VC bearing figure? Watch, from now on, whenever a guy showws up with a unit with a VC bearer, opponents will say: "Bull ! You bought that guy from Smokey on EBAY!" LOL! |

I was playing in a game at Historicon and my buddy Nick Zizo won a VC in the game and Larry Brom was there and presented him the medal. It was pretty cool. We celebrated with a few adult beverages after the game! I can't remember the scenario or the GM though. I'm sure Nick remembers. Cheers, JB *Smokey

Smokey, let the quest for the VC go brother
Lol. When you least expect it, BAM, you'll earn it. Start coming back to the cons and give yourself a chance to win one. I'm running The Wind And The Lion at Recon. Your beloved 24th won't be involved but it will be fun nonetheless. I put a couple of pics on my blog. Yep, you heard right, my blog, I did it. sgtguinness.blogspot.com Cheers, JB |
John the OFM | 24 Apr 2014 7:29 a.m. PST |
To earn a VC is difficult. But to wipe him out on a key card is just icky. I would make him the lowest ranking officer in the beaten zone, so the Colonel and the Major bite the dust before he does. In other words, NEVER promote him! Did Chard and Bromhead ever make it past Lieutenant? |
Smokey Roan | 24 Apr 2014 8:54 p.m. PST |
Yes, they were promoted. Once and only once. |
