A Turkish F-16 shot down a Syrian MiG-23 supporting government forces in a battle against rebels at a border crossing.

A Turkish F-16 fired a rocket at the Syrian jet and it crashed around 1,200 meters (1,300 yards) inside Syrian territory.

Given that rockets are fired in salvos, I think they meant an AAM.

A turkey shoot, then?

John D Salt23 Mar 2014 12:23 p.m. PST

How many AAMs do you know that are not rockets?

I can think of a couple, but I don't think Turkey has any of them.

All the best,

John.

Rocket = unguided, missile = guided.

AIR-2 Genie: Air-launched Interceptor (unguided) Rocket #2.
AIM-9 Sidewinder: Air-launched Interceptor (guided) Missile #9.

Would the reporter and editor understand that difference?

This is the second Turkish kill of a Syrian aircraft – they blasted a Mi-17 Hip a while back.

Syrian AF is getting hammered though through attrition against rebels as well as losses of airbases:

Lack of Precision Guided capability means they have to use WWII style tactics which has led to high casualties from AA.

Also standard tactics for AAMs in the 1960s also included being launched in salvos. :P

Now that I think of it, there's no distinction between 'rocket' and 'missile' in 40K. Some people prefer 'rocket launcher' over 'missile launcher' because it doesn't have the word 'miss' in it.

I doubt they would know the difference, they still call everything a "fighter jet".

And I'm one of them.

Man, Syrian Air Force morale must really suck, since they are always on the short end of the stick, losing aircraft to many nations in the region.

Especially when the Israeli Air Force comes around and hands the Syrian's their heads with alarming frequency. Salut y'all.
