I am trying to decide if I want to expand my wolf rider goblin army. But my thought are should I get Goblins with bows are should I have them with hand weapons such as spear or sword. This is my take. I think wolf riders archers could be more effective, because they can shoot and not have to make contact, where as a hand weapon would be in contact with another base, etc. But they are also mobile infantry at the same time. It doesn't matter what rule set you use, its more philosophy. Just trying to decide on Bow or spear. I also know trying to hit a target while moving is also hard. But attacking the rear of an enemy and being able to deploy around them seems smarter. Its a $300 USD question. Thanks for your input. Tom tidesofwargaming.blogspot.com Any thoughts.

Don't forget that 99% of what goblin wolf riders do are LURKING. Therefore, I think, missile light cavalry is what they do best. They LURK. |

I mix them on bases and give them low missile ability. I don't see true "wolf rider archers" so as to make them true missile cavalry. |

Very good thank you! Missile cavalry, true. And that is what I was thinking too light to be shock troops against anything. Most everything that they would hit would be heavy (on my table). My other armies they go against are High Elf, Bretonnia and all the LOTR armies. I will stick with missile cavalry, seems I would get more benefit out of them. These riders are more hob-goblin and small on big wolves. But I still may spend my money on some more Greater Orc heavy infantry

I always looked at wolf riders as fantasy Huns. Light, hit and run cavalry. Goblins philosophy is to avoid death anyway. For hard hitting cavalry Orcs on boars fit the bill. Have you seen the vendel wolf riders? Very nice range (28mm), and regular prices, not fantasy prices. |

yes, I looked at them, almost bought some. But I was curious about the Thunderbolt Mountain ones. I am still curious about them, maybe I will buy one to see how they look. Tom |

In Barkerese (DBx), wolf riders would be superior light horse, capable of both melee and missile fire. This is as compared to Fast light horse, which is essentially only horse archers, or Ordinary light horse, which lacks missile power. |

Can't you get a mix of both and fill the front rank with whichever armament you are fielding the unit as? |

I like the Thunderbolt mountain wolves. They are very nice sculpts and a good size. |

I have 36, I am thinking that is enough. I decided I may just beef up my black orc infantry instead, that would be worth it, instead of getting a lot of wolf riders that are not so deadly as far as skill level with the bow. Being only missile troops kinda summed it up for me. Tom |

In HoTT, the debate is whether your wolf riders should be classified as knights versus regular cavalry (or light cavalry) given the wolf' sown ability to fight as a fierce creature. Think of the scenes in The Two Towers and in The Hobbit movies between wolf riders and Rohan riders or the dwarves. |

In HotT, I class riders as Riders and riderless wolves as Beasts. In my own homebrew game, they are close-combat cavalry (medium-heavy) with no terrain penalties, but they only deploy in hard-to-maneuver large units. This actually makes them rather expensive, but is a good fit for Tolkien's descriptions (not GW's). |

In Hott, I would class them depedant on the background of the army. Beasts for Warg riders, Riders for Warhammer goblins. |

I'm working on 15mm wolf riders – basically have both types of units. I always figure that wolves in fantasy are bigger and meaner than real-world ones (they'd have to be to carry someone, even a small someone, on their back), so they could conceivably have some shock value. But overall, their best attribute would be speed; like historical lt. cav they would wait for heavier units (wargs) to break the enemy lines and then exploit/pursue. Looking at my models, most of them do not have saddles. Gobbos ride bareback? They tie themselves on? That's what I wonder about! |

Unless you are planning on running them in formations of 15-20, I would jsut go with Spear & Shield. Put a Goblin Big Boss (Hero) in with them for Leadership and better results in combat. They are meant to go after those small shooting units and war machines. Plus to chase routed units off the table. |

Have you considered poaching the rules from historical games for Camels against horses unfamiliar with their scent? Tolkien wrote about the horses of Rohan being unnerved by the wolf-riders at the Fords of Isen, and this might be the main ability of the Goblin wolf-riders – breaking up formations by getting close and unsettling them. Of course if the horses are successfully mastered then trying to manouevre a snarling fur-ball out of the way of a lance might be problematic! |
darclegion | 26 Mar 2014 11:47 a.m. PST |
that is a thought about the scent of wolves and horses, I will take that into consideration. I like that. I painted up the 36 I had. Decided not to buy any more. But
.I did buy a massive unit of heavy orc infantry
and also 100 Orc Crossbow
which are very good against heavy armored armies,
I like that purchase. Being how goblin and orc bow are not very strong, and usually armor saves are on the other end with heavy armored knights, crossbolts can go thru armor and no armor save is allowed, so I thought that was impressive. So I spent my money on heavies and crossbolts. Pretty fearsome army now. |
