A brief report of the day of DBA played at Battlecry in Auckland last month:

Mark,
Thanks for sharing. Though not a follower of the DBA crowd, there is much to be said for the simple nature of 12-elements per side and a small square battlefield.

Aztecs versus Welsh?! Unusual and interesting . . .

In my opinion, the photos were pretty good.

Thanks, the photos were from my phone. Besides the size and number of figures needed, there's the time: we get 4-5 games in a four hour session.

There's a legend that a Welsh prince got to North America. He might have gone south!

Many people treat DBA like chess, the figures are just playing pieces, makes no difference what they represent. I have a Simpsons chess set that I sometimes play against the Napoleon chess that nobody gets too upset.

The best way to play DBA however, is to have matched historical pairs. This is a very popular format in many venues. Each player brings two armies. After all there are only 12 elements per army so it's simple to have 100 figures or less for 2 armies. Then the players alternate against opponents, picking which Army will be used. In my game against you, you provide the armies, and I pick which one I want to use.

This is the only form of the tournament that I think is appropriate for DBA, unless there is some other form of historical matchups being used.

Stack of skulls, eh? Nice folks, them Carthaginians.

Mark Davies23 Mar 2014 11:56 a.m. PST

The skulls were newly finished and were there for decorations. Associating them with the Carthaginians may be a bit unfair of me, especially with their camp! They were prone to crucifying people, a habit they shared with the other civilizations of the ancient world. What seemed to have horrified the Romans was that they would crucify misbehaving citizens; the Romans viewed it as a punishment for slaves and foreigners. To my mind that makes the Romans worse!

I like matched pairs too. We may try it for a day of the next competition.

Interesting looking games. Thanks for posting the link. :-)

I notice that most people (here and elsewhere) seem to use tactically positioned terrain elements. In contrast, I have always used finished terrain boards (per 1.0), varied slightly with the possibility of the Defender putting a wood or 2 on the board, and with the variation coming from dicing for starting edge.

Thanks. I've played in only one comp with preset terrain. It was fun, though the terrain was a bit wild! Some armies only really work if they're the defenders and take the right terrain.
