And 6mm pandas for the pagodas, please. |
teenage visigoth | 22 Mar 2014 10:46 a.m. PST |
Perfect, pandas would perfect the pagoda's presence. |

Why does war game Asian architecture always look like vaguely racist crap, like they got the designs from teabags at a Chinese takeout in 1956? There are thousands of accessible sources on east asian architecture, look before you "sculpt". |
Skeptic | 22 Mar 2014 11:50 a.m. PST |
You may want to look for Japanese historical or model railway kits. Castle kits are available in the scales that correspond to the gamer's sizes that you mention, and there are kits of other structures, too. |

What is 'racist' about a small model building ? Inaccurate possibly (though without knowing WHAT it is intended to be, or WHEN, I can't see how you'd know) but hardly any worse than that. |

Mura miniatures make a good range of 6mm Japanese buildings – no pagodas but a nice shrine. muraminiatures.com |

Why does war game Asian architecture always look like vaguely racist crap What, you joined up just to b!tch about some 6mm buildings? |
Nyctalope | 22 Mar 2014 12:02 p.m. PST |
Yes tberry. My life is devoted to authentic stupas in 6mm. Only 6mm. |

My buildings (mura miniatures) are 6mm, but should work somewhat ok for 10mm. No pagodas yet, but we'll see, as I want to expand the range once I get better equipment. As for "orientalist" terrain, I have to agree that some manufacturers are better than others when it comes to details. Personally I always use actual historical buildings or illustrations as the starting point of my buildings, but it really helps to have access to Japanese books on architectural history. |

"Racist" I guess you have never been to China Although Irregular's sculpting is not that great it is easy to see the similarity between their castings and these actual Chinese examples

Thanks all for spiffing options. Totally forgot about Irregular and am pleased to be introduced to Mura. Disclosure wise, authenticity is not a big deal in this project as these building will serve as objectives and dressing for my nascent Giant Robots vs Kaiju game. There are a lot of lazy assumptions dressed up as 'flavour' in wargame sculpting and rules. Nice to see some discussion on a civil level regarding it. -TV (off to watch Gojira vs King Gidorah for research purposes

Toronto you can see the "resemblance" on the teabags too, but the reality is much broader and less obnoxiously cartoony. Tho' if authenticity isn't important who gives a damn, as kaiju-chow its kitschy fun. Chinese architecture (much less "Asian" architecture) covers an immense amount of ground, when I look at those crap Irregular buildings it's clear how little effort goes into this kind of thing

I'm Chinese-American and I find the Irregular 6mm structures as stereotypical of what the West would think they should be but definitely not "racist" By the way I bought a set and I quite like them |
Legion 4 | 24 Mar 2014 10:11 a.m. PST |
Although I'm not generally a fan of their figures, their structures I quite like. irregularminiatures.co.uk They have an Aztec Village that I'm tempted to buy, could work for my Sci-fi terrain. As well as they make The Alamo and Rorke's Drift ! Plus other very interesting structures from many other eras

Hey I'm lazy !!!! Old and lazy !! Anyone got a problem with that ?! |
GildasFacit | 24 Mar 2014 11:53 a.m. PST |
Quite a lot of Irregular's catalogue is old, some more than 20 years old. I'll bet that this was probably sculpted in pre-Internet days when images of international architecture were not as easily available. Techniques have changed over the years and what was acceptable then is less so now – particularly if there is a better alternative. Irregular has a vast set of ranges in sizes from 2mm to 54mm (even bigger now, I think) and their 6mm are not of what might be called 'modern' standard of sculpting. They do, however, have a good deal of 'character' and are pretty popular – so they can't be that bad. |

I have a love/hate relationship with Irregular. Their casts are usually cromag in execution but there's something magnetic about them
I stand by my critique of the "Asian" buildings with the turned up eaves being the only real diagnostic of origin
..I'm looking right now at a pic of the Nandaimon of the Enryaku-ji and none of those dippity-doo structures even approach how cool it is

The infantry vehicles, etc., are sub-standard based on all those great 6mm models from GW, CinC, DRM, Exodus Wars, Microworld, GZG, Onslaught, Adlers, GHQ, etc., etc.
However they have one of the Best structure selections going
and as opposed to many manufacturers
they are Not Gothic ! So tempted to get that Aztec Village ! |
