Through the magic of cable TV – (and the fact the wife wasn't home) I got to watch a war movie I never heard of before.
Takes place along the Gothic line in 1944.

It was told from 3 perspectives: a German Lt, An Italian Lt and an American sergeant and there outfits. You can also throw in what appears to be a Mafia type and some communist partisans.

I did have one question. The American sergeant (an alcoholic) was part of a supply unit that has to resupply some grunts at the front lines (they sure took their sweet time doing it)who are running low on ammo.
They were complaining that they shouldn't have to go because delivering ammunition was the job of ordinance not supply.

Didn't know there was a difference.

There are three main logistical departments in the US Army. Ordnance, Transportation, and Quartermaster. The Quartermaster Corps was responsible for all supply NOT including ammo or medical. The Transportation Corps moves material strategically and operationally (think RRs and Red Ball Express). In World War II the Ordnance Service was responsible for getting weapons and ammunition to the combat troops only to the divisional level. The combat units themselves would collect ammo at the Division Ammo Supply Points and move it forward.

It would seem that the Sgt was part of the units supply organization and wanted the Ordnance guys to bring it more forward … that was not their job.

The question we all want to ask is…how was the movie?

It's not great. I have it on DVD.

All the best,

John.

Unusual is one way of describing it. It's not up with Saving Private Ryan, but its watchable.

Like Bracken said.

That's why you have Logistics Officers that coordinate the different classes of supplies, transport assets, etc. …
