Dear Mr. Gingerich, The lining was to be of undyed каразея / karazeya – a medium weight, coarse woolen cloth woven with oblique or herringbone patterned threads and indeed typically used for linings. I think it would be "kersey" in English and "carisel" or "cariseau" in French. The inter-lining in the sleeves was supposed to canvas, and on the chest and back, oilclothe (practical idea!). From
. Повседневная жизнь русского гусара в царствование императора Александра I Бегунова Алла Игоревна M: Молодая гвардия, 2000 link (She sources the PSZ "shtat" for uniforms and equipment.) However, from photos in the article from "Tseik" that you may be looking at, you can see that the lining for the surviving mentik of a trooper of the Sumskiy regiment is orange-brown, while that of a Mariupolskiy hussar is light ocher – which allowing for age, does indeed suggest oilclothe, perhaps the kersey lining having been lost over time. - Sasha |

Dear Mr. Gingerich, The following converts .fb2 and .ra (and many other formats) on-line for free, without registration : convertfiles.com And may I please take the opportunity to thank you once again for your excellent work on Russian uniformology and your Russian order of battle for the Borodino battle. Such excellent resources! - Sasha P.S. – You will, I think, be happier with Mac OS or a nice Linux distro like Mint xfce than with your Windows 8 ("ugh" indeed). Unless you must have a touchscreen capability, Windows 7 might even be more amenable to actually letting you use the machine than Win 8. :-) |
