what is on the 28mm market to use as a mount for figures other than horses?
I know there are boars and spiders

Lion in the Stars18 Mar 2014 5:37 p.m. PST

There are also Griffons and pegasi, as well as Dragons.

I'm looking for something cheap enough to mount a troop

Search the old Mage Knight collectible figure line on eBay. They made a whole range of mounted figures, who are easily separated from their mounts. I have made up units using both their mechanical horse mounts and their lizard mounts.

Doesn't someone make 25mm ostriches? That's what I was going to use if I ever went that route.

There's also camels.

"Doesn't someone make 25mm ostriches?"

RAFM used to have orcs on cassowarys or emus or something….

Riding an ostrich would be silly.

Ostrich-drawn chariots, on the other hand… that just screams out taste and distinction.

Mage Knight also made a mechanical dragonfly, and a mechanical cat, and a mechanical ram.

There are also cheap plastic toy dinosaurs that might fit the bill. Personally I like the ceratopsian kind, but raptors have their fans as well. You could try to find GW Cold Ones or Carnosaurs for dinos already sized in 28mm, but they get a bit pricey. If money is not an issue, Forge World makes these:

But they run 18.50 GBP each. link

Dear Gray Ghost

Two sources to go to religiously.

1. Dollar Stores- they frequently have bags and bags of kids animals that often are right in scale or useable, and these can be had for … well.. often $1 USD .

2. A.C. Moore Store has lost of a higher grade of figure, including Animals in their TOOB boxed tubes for children. These have all sorts of things from farm animals to monuments, to soldiers, to fish etc., They're about $800 USD a toob and have about a dozen animals each.

A lot of these will work with 28mm.

3. Search the Walther Catalog (Model Railroading) for the animals and especially "O" guage suff, which is a little large for 28mm but you can get away with it.

Tamiya makes a six-pack of Velociraptors (as well as other dinosaurs) that make good mounts.

Iron Clad Miniatures sells Martians on Thamels (not sure what a thamel is) link and Sanwar on Lizards link If you figure out what color to paint a Thamel let me know. I have 28 of them in the Lead pile awaiting attention.

Pretty much any dinos will work. A while back someone posted pics of some of these type of dinos with a little sculpt work (adding bridles and saddles) and very well done paint jobs (as opposed to the tt qual ones).

Depending on what you want size-wise, our Blasted Planets Chickasaurus is pretty nifty. Might be too small for some 28mm figures. It comes with or without tack. We also have our Wooly Bool, but I'm pretty sure he would be too small for most 28mm needs.
For pictures checkout:

For my own games, I've also used various dinosaurs that I've found at Dollar Tree and other dollar type stores.

I picked up an old set of six-legged camels from a John Carter set once (Archive miniatures? probably from the '70's). they were in a junk box at an old gaming shop. I mounted Cataphracti riders on them, two to a camel.

Bears from Grenadier (come with dwarfs)
Loads of people do wolves for goblins; BTD, Kallistra.

AA make riding dodos, hippos and pigs and probably a load more.

Technically, the Thoakes are the other mount, but I'd really like to see a unit, seated on the second shoulders, of Baralanth riders. ;->=

Sir Randall, you have Thamels? You never mentioned that. What dire plan are you hatching?!?

I shall keep that pair lungs you supplied ever handy, just in case!
