1460, Northampton … a key battle of the Wars of the Roses. The battle took place south of the Nene in the vicinity of Delapre Abbey and within view of the Eleanor Cross.

Amidst debate about the exact location, and sporadic plans for development, sympathetic and destructive, Northampton Borough Council have put their policies out to public consultation and there is a questionnaire online …

link (scroll down to start survey now link)

Please take the time to fill out the survey – every response stacks up to show people care about this. Hopefully you will also want to include in your comments that the site is a registered battlefield and any archaeology done should not be used as an excuse for development.

Closing date is 27th March so don't delay …

Trebian has posted some good reasons why you should care link

For more about the battle, see Northampton Battlefields Society's new website

Britain's military heritage is constantly under threat – your support in completing the survey can help save Northampton battlefield.

Thanks in advance

Phil

Phil…good luck with this. We have the same issues here in the US with ACW battlefields going under the developers bulldozers or being threatened by race tracks, casinos, and strip malls, or theme parks or big box stores.

Thanks, Murphy …

Having visited many of the US's excellent Battlefield Parks I must admit that I generally cite them as examples of best practice when talking to local councillors and such about English sites … (Visitor Centres, Rangers, self-guided walks etc.) – but I guess, as a visitor, I have mostly gone where I know there are things to see and access available.

It is a pity that 'best practice' is not the universal standard.

Done. I grew up in Duston and Creaton and my parents lived in the county for nearly 50 years so I support this (and the Saints).
