Hello folks, I was wondering if there was a WWII rules set that supported ad-hoc scenario's, such as 'what if's between German and american navies and the like? With ship stats and such? Sort of like Dystopian wars, but set in WWII and with better rules? |

Naval Thunder. Each ship also has a point value so you can "balance" a scenario. Sort of. |

Almost any set of rules will do wouldn't they? Let's ask it the other way round: what is missing from all the existing rules (Task Force, General Quarters, Naval Thunder, Victory At Sea et. al.) that prevents you from using them? |

Panzerschiffes. Old, yes, but viable yet. |

Like John said, what is it you are trying to achieve? You can use any old set of WW2 naval rules to fight hypothetical battles, just assemble your ships, line them up and and off you go. I think I've done more WW2 hypotheticals than actual battles (largely because by WW2 the era of the big gun ship was over and it was all about subs and aircraft, but they are boring:) |

John, Martin, I am trying to get some of my gamer friends who mostly play magic and dnd into miniatures. Historicals if I can. While I enjoy a good game that might last 8 hours, trying to get them to play such a game more than once would be painful. I figured something that's easy to learn with a fairly simple and balanced system would be best for introducing them to the game. I like the fast pace of dystopian wars, and the 'you go, I go' system that keeps people engaged constantly, and think that would probably keep participation and fun high in my group. Later I hope to get them enough into wargaming to get them to play more advanced rule sets. Also my fleets (a great number of french ships and italian ships from the early years of the war in 1/4800) would probably not fight in many scenarios, but could battle each other in a fun 'what if' with a points value base. Everyone else, thanks for the list of suggestions! Victory at Sea and General Quarters look really neat. The internet says a new version of victory at sea is coming out (I goggled it), though its been saying that since 2012. Torn between waiting and buying the current version. :D |

Whatever rules you use, here's a scenario rational: the Italian fleet is running a convoy to Cyrenica in early 1940. The French fleet moves to intercept, or just stumbles into them, your choice. The transports all run off (so you don't have to put them on the table) and the Italian fleet has to delay the French for X turns while keeping losses down. |

Just finished a bit of reading on Naval Thunder, that also seems fun. |

Rather than buying a ruleset for your group to play, find out how they react to naval games with any of the free rulesets on line, (unless you want a certain set of rules for yourself) I recommend you try out some of the free naval rules available at link easy ship---has all the french and italian ship data for the game. as the title says, basic type of game Fire on the Waters--more complex but very well done Firepower--very basic ship types rather than by nation, straightforward type play plus others there or elsewhere. If you find that your group takes to them or feels that more detail is wanted then you can buy something to their (or your) liking. Based on what you've told us so far, I think that Axis and Allies War at Sea, Micronauts (GHQ), Naval Thunder or Taskforce might suit your group. All are fairly fast, easier rules/procedures, low number of charts
. (Victory at Sea--Tho I have a copy, personally I would shy away from it. I won't go into detail here on why.) |

Thanks again for the advice. The more I look at Naval Thunder, the more appealing it is. The scenario suggestion is awesome too. I have a few idea's in my head as well, though beginning battles will likely be each person controlling a ship or two while we all learn the system. Here is a list of my ships that I have, in case anyone was curious. In a strait up fight between these two fleet, I think the Italian's would win, though it might be close for the more advanced cruisers the French have: French Fleet: Battle Cruisers: Dunkerque – Dunkerque Class (BC) Strasbourg – Dunkerque Class (BC) Heavy Cruisers: Algerie – Algerie class (CA) Suffren – Suffren class (CA) Duquesne – Duquesne class (CA) Dupleix – Suffren class (CA) Foch – Suffren class (CA) Tourville – Duquesne class (CA) Colbert – Suffren class (CA) Light Cruisers: La Galissonnière -La Galissonniere Class (CL) Montcalm -La Galissonniere Class (CL) Georges Leygues -La Galissonniere Class (CL) Jean de Vienne -La Galissonniere Class (CL) Marseillaise -La Galissonniere Class (CL) Gloire -La Galissonniere Class (CL) Jeanne D'Arc – Jeanne d'Arc class (CL) Duguay-Trouin – Duguay Trouin class (CL) La Motte – Duguay Trouin class (CL) Picquet – Duguay Trouin class (CL) Destroyers: Le Fantasque – Le Fantasque Class (DD) Le Malin – Le Fantasque Class (DD) Le Terrible – Le Fantasque Class (DD) L'Indomptable – Le Fantasque Class (DD) L'Audacieux – Le Fantasque Class (DD) Le Triomphant – Le Fantasque Class (DD)
Italian Fleet:
Battle Ships: Conte di Cavour – Cavour Class (BB) Giulio Cesare – Cavour Class (BB) Andrea Doria – Doria Class (BB) Caio Duilio – Doria Class (BB) Heavy Cruisers: Trieste – Trento Class (CA) Trento – Trento Class (CA) Bolzano – Trento Class (CA) Fiume – Zara Class (CA) Gorizia – Zara Class (CA) Pola – Zara Class (CA) Zara – Zara Class (CA)
Light Cruisers: Alberto da Giussano – Giussano Class (CL) Giovanni dalle Bande Nere – Giussano Class (CL) Alberico da Barbiano – Giussano Class (CL) Bartolomeo Colleoni – Giussano Class (CL) Luigi Cadorna – Cadorna Class (CL) Armando Diaz – Cadorna Class (CL) Muzio Attendolo – Montecuccoli Class (CL) Raimondo Montecuccoli – Montecuccoli Class (CL) Emanuele Filiberto Duca d`Aosta – Duca D'Aosta Class (CL) Eugenio di Savoia – Duca D'Aosta Class (CL) Giuseppe Garibaldi – Abruzzi Class (CL) Duca degli Abruzzi – Abruzzi Class (CL) Destroyers: Luca Tarigo – Navagatori Class (DD) Alvise da Mosto – Navagatori Class (DD) Antonio da Noli – Navagatori Class (DD) Nicoloso da Recco – Navagatori Class (DD) Giovanni da Verrazzano – Navagatori Class (DD) Ugolino Vivaldi – Navagatori Class (DD)

I'm as far from a WWII Naval historian as one could get. However, I did play Victory at Sea and enjoyed the game. I can't tell you whether it produces historical results, but I can tell you it produce believable, is simple, and is fun to play. |

Das Sheep, don't rule out Fletcher Pratt's Naval Wargame! It is fast, dead easy to learn, requires skill more than luck, and doesn't last too long
, and it's fun!!! Making out the Data Cards is a bit labour intensive (although simple enough) but as that's done before you play the game, it doesn't slow down the game play. I have started using it in my club, and although all previous attempts to get the rest of the gang interested in naval games failed miserably, they really enjoy these rules. |

I bought Naval Thunder (I wish it came in a paper back, my printer sucks) and VaS, though after reading them I really like Naval Thunder the most. I will probably end up buying several of the other rules sets yall suggested because, well, I love collecting rules books. Anyway I think I am going to take an above suggestion and have a scenario, pitting a group of Italian Cruisers (and two destroyers!) against French cruisers. The Italian's goal will be to drive off the French and protect their shipping. The French will have the goal of destroying the Italian shipping (and maybe some of their cruisers!), but also escaping without loosing to many, or any, of their ships. For this I decided on the following fleets: CA Section Fiume Gorizia Pola CL Section Alberto da Giussano Giovanni dalle Bande Nere Alberico da Barbiano Escort Section: Luigi Cadorna Luca Tarigo Alvise da Mosto 8 generic un armed axis transports. French Raiders: CA Section: Algerie Duquesne Tourville CA Section: Foch Colbert CL Section: Duguay-Trouin La Motte Picquet Over all I think it will be a bloody skirmish because Treaty Cruisers 8 inch guns tend to be more than a match for Treaty Cruiser armor. The French have one fewer ships, but a significant point advantage (according to the Naval Thunder point system), and they have more Heavy Cruisers than the Italians. At the same time, they are trying to sink Italian shipping and escape without loosing their precious cruisers, and the Italians have a motivation to protect these vital war supplies headed to Libya.
French victory conditions will give them points for enemy shipping sunk, and loose points for cruisers lost. The Italians will gain points for each transport that escapes the dastardly French, and each French cruiser that's sunk, or has engine damage. I think this will be a good intro for my friends, and assume they will throw enough wrenches into my plans to make it not play out at all like it is in my mind. |
