Wondering if anyone can identify where the flag comes from on the left of Jacques Callot's sketch of a firing squad during the late Renaiassance. It seems to have a sun on it which leads me to believe that it could be a flag originating in France, yet if someone has more info that could be good. Here is a link to a picture of it

Like most if not all of Callot's depictions it is probably a pretty generic design more or less based on soldiers he was able to see himself. The sun as such is not a particularly "French" symbol during the TYW, I know of both Swedish and German (protestant & catholic) flags with similar suns as well. |

The flag also appears to be striped – which is another common design of the time. I'd agree with Daniel, may not be any specific flag illustrated just 'a flag'. |

On close examination the "stripes" on the flags appear to be indications of color value rather than actual stripes. |
