I am looking for the best quality and variety for a Seleucid army
..I initially was looking for 15mm but failed to realize my opponent has his greeks, romans and celts in 25/28mm
.. I have seen Avertine (I believe that is correct) and they look amazing. I know 1st Corps has the entire range as well. Do Avertine and 1st Corps figures match or is there a distinctive difference? Also, I am looking for the biggest and meanest looking armored elephants as well! Thanks! |

IMHO,you can use G.B. Polemarch range. Also Aventine do not mix 1st Corps. Aventine is a VERY good range and will be adding more figures soon. If you are in the states you could use Old Glory with there Army card!!!!!!!. Mike |

Aventine's ranges are great. I have a few units of their Etruscans and Samnites eager to grow into a vengeful anti-Roman horde. Too bad no snakehandling priests tho'. |

Are the 1st Corps figs smaller? 1st Corps seems to be the only range that covers all the units I need. Aventine only has a few, very few if I recall. I will go back and look at gripping beast. I saw a site that listed all the makers of 25/28mm Successors, there was one that had a lot of animation and options
.that might have been 1st Corps or Magistrum Milisomething

Seleucid armies are bot really self contained, in that they have a huge diversity
this is one of their strengths in terms of look and variety, but a weakness (in reality) as a unified force. Often one cannot find all the components of Seleucids in one range-- since there are so many possible elements. Cataphracts, phalangites, thureophoroi, and thorakitai are very abundant now. You have many choices to mix and match. Currently the 28mm Seleucids I recommend: Gripping Beast Polemarch range has a relatively full range of the Hellenistic elements, including scythed chariots (which are symbolic but mostly useless units)
Aventine Successor Pikemen Thureophoroi Cavalry 1st Corps; Although smaller than the above ranges they have compatible cavalry which are very nice, especially their cataphracts, and chariots. Relic Miniatures has a growing line of realistic proportioned 28mm including there new cataphracts and thureophoroi which are very nice. (as seen in WSS 70)
Old Glory has some of their best figures as Seleucids and some of their hard to recreate allies, but are difficult to get in UK. Allies and mercenaries are harder to collect such as Arab infantry and cavalry. Syrian local light cavalry. Galatians are easier in many ways because one can just use regular Celts and dress some up in Hellenistic helmets (plastic makes this easier than ever). Horse archers too
. Magister Militum has some figures that also cover allies as well, but they don't have the variety that most modern figure companies offer in poses. Paul Rigby's Arab cavalry by Magister Militum:
Again Relic is trying to complete some of these open areas. And is soon to release Agema cavalry and a scythed chariot. Aventine has some the finest armored elephants. Gripping Beast has just released theirs but I have not seen them yet. Sadly I am not fond of 1st Corps leviathan elephants. Paul Rigby's Aventine elephant stomping phalanx:
Old Glory elephants are ok
they no longer fit well with Aventine or other top models-- they are however, cheap. Old Glory Seleucid elephant:
Few models match the aniamtion and vitality of this classic Hinchcliffe 25mm (small) model: link Many of these images are from mine and Paul Rigby's collection which if perused give a good overview of Successor figures: link |

I sometimes think that the relative weakness of Diadochi armies versus Rome (esp in the case of the Seleukids) is that they inherited via the Achaemenids a less absolute idea of war than that tribe of paranoid Latin farmers. |

one thing I noticed with 1st Corps and Aventine

I still have a soft spot for the Essex Miniatures Seleucids. |

Arch Duke of Nothing There a lot of great ranges out there and available at present, the Aventine range covers Pyrrhus and the early Western successors but is short the Seleucid troop types needed to complete an army all from a single manufacturer. We will be adding to the range to include the likes of Companions, Agema cataphracts, thorakitai, skirmiskers with javelin, and light horse. There maybe more but it is Saturday night and Ireland have just won the Six Natures Rugby Championship and I have been on the hooch. We plan to start that lot once we have completed the Samnites which will follow the Parthians/Early Sassanid we are currently working upon. Cheers Keith Aventine Miniatures PS Thank the lord for spell checking

Paul you old softy – I like the Essex guys as well (maybe we are both getting older and more tolerant
.). They do have some handy Seleucid line cavalry – used some of Keith's excellent Pyrrhic command with them. I hope you don't do any more design work Keith until the guinness is out of the system! Whot is a skirmisker BTW?? Arch Duke – I would go with Relic's Companions and Cataphracts by the way, loads of character and animation. Garry |

Garry I thought that I had done alright under the circumstances
lol |
Mithridates | 15 Mar 2014 8:11 p.m. PST |
Keith I was sure you would have. Congratulations on the Championship. My problem with your forthcoming releases is that I will 'need' yet another unit of each of the Companions and Cataphracts – just how many of these did the Seleucids field! I presume that, as with Pyrrhus, you will have Generals for the Seleucids and Parthians? Garry |

Yep, that would be the norm for us. |

If you want big armoured elephants, Aventine is your choice. They also have lots of various phalanx troops. My Seleucids also have -Old Glory phalanx (in the UK oldgloryuk.com ) -Some Foundry -1st corps (nice cavalry!) -Gripping Beast / Polemarch (lovely mini's, but expensive) -My Galatians are mostly Old Glory, but you could get cheap plastics too (Wargames Factory, Warlord Games) All are more or less compatible sizewise. Have fun constructing your army! Wim |

I use a mix of Old Glory and 1st Corps. |
