after a decade plus break from painting minis I started off painting 15mm sci-fi stuff, metal and resin. Once fall and winter hit I switched over to using gesso and paint on matte sealer on my minis. No problems with my 15mm stuff at all, worked fine. Now I've started getting into Warhammer 40k (only game in town that I can play with my son that other people are playing on a organized basis) and painting minis. I'm doing the same thing I've been doing with my 15mm minis now for months, clean off flash, glue, couple of coats of gesso, paint with the same paints (craft acrylic, has worked fine on everything else for 18 months or so now), wash to add shadows, highlight, seal. The problem is that now when I brush on the wash or sealer it wipes the paint off! I wind up going back and touching it up afterwords. I've had some success just dabbing on the sealer instead of brushing, and tried placing the mini in the wash instead brushing it on. I've tried waiting longer for the pain to dry before doing anything, no improvement. The paint basically wears off while I'm brushing on the wash and sealer and I can see the gesso underneath. Has anyone had a similar experience? These are the first plastic minis I've used the gesso on, but obviously not the first minis I've painted over a gesso primer. My already mediocre painting ability and speed is being majorly slowed down by this problem. Thankfully I can go back to spray on primer soon, but I don't want to wait a month to do these minis. |

Not entirely sure that the Gesso is the culprit. What wash and what sealer are you using? Have you used the brush you are applying the wash/sealer with for anything other than water based work? |

Had a similar problem when I used Windsor and Newton acrylic satin varnish. See TMP link. TMP link I am going back to using Humbrol satincote type varnish as sealer before using "Magic Wash". Gesso definitely not the problem, although you do need to let it, and subsequent coats of paint, dry for 24 hours. As the acrylic varnish and the paints are both water-based, this type of varnish may dissolve paint. |

If the GW figures are "Fine"cast, maybe some of the resin hasn't cured all the way, and there is some oily seepage bleeding through that your primer/paint/sealer won't stick to. If that's the case, not sure what to tell you

Occasionally have that problem if I have not let the paint dry fully. I may rush coats while I'm blocking colors and doing detail work, but anymore I let let things dry for 24 hrs minimum before washing and/or sealing. Also I keep separate, dedicated brushes for priming, painting/washing and varnish. |
