Are there any films covering this period?? |

I can't recall seeing a single one, I'd be interested in any suggestions! |

You could take a look at the following list link I've only heard of Mademoiselle Fifi, but haven't seen any of those listed. I'm most surprised that the Nazis didn't make any films set during this war. |

I've seen "Champ d'honneur." It used to be available on VHS and was pretty good. |

The list is nice but not complete: movie trying to explain the reasons for the wars of unification. Bismarck (ufa 1940) imdb.com/title/tt0032255 It is a " state made movie/ nazi propaganda" and is therefor blacklisted. Covers more 1866 and shows only minor battle scenes of 1870 but. Covers all negotiations etc
to be watched with prejudice. The best depiction of the warfare is: Die Gans von Sedan (Hardy Küger 1959) link This is a comedy but great! |

"Champ D'Honneur" mentioned above is pretty good, though the war plays a secondary role. A great scene is when the French face a German attack in a wood. The way they did the war-cry was pretty cool. Peter Watkins 7 hour film on the Paris Commune is longish, and depending on your politics annoying, but still worth a look. It is cool how he used ordinary people, sometimes on purpose choosing people for roles depending on their political beliefs. Adds a bit to the intensity. "Novvy Vavilon" is worth a look, but it is a Soviet Propaganda film. But yes, very very few films on the war itself. I guess the Germans avoid it because of its assocaition with militarism, and in France the more dramatic event is the Commune. Hopefully the Danish 1864 series will do well enough to create some interest for more films on the wars of german unification. |

I'm surprised Zola's 'La Debacle' was never filmed, but then again would you want reminding of such a traumatic event as the FPW? |

Found this on Youtube -a documentry in German with lots of dramatised scenes. YouTube link |

Yes, Zola's Le Debacle would make a great series or movie. Again hopefully if 1864 does well it will motivate people. Remember, there are not that many movies on the 1866 war either. |

The subject is not very popular in France
:) The FPW sometimes appears in the background of a story; as in "La Jument Verte"
or in the first part of "Les Alsaciens ou les Deux Mathilde" a 4-parts French TV film about a family story in Alsace link |

Here's a clip that features some bloke wandering about dressed up as a Chasseur d'Afrique. Looks like he's just found the uniform in a dressing up box and he's seems to have mislaid his sword. I wonder if there's a porn version -maybe this is the porn version
:) YouTube link |

I guess the Germans avoid it because of its association with militarism, and in France the more dramatic event is the Commune Interesting question
:) In fact the FPW does not raise much interest in France, not because of defeat or shame, but because it's almost another planet. An interesting clue: no French political opinion feels interested in it or in Napoleon III. Nationalists sees him as a lower (loser) Bonaparte; the left is more interested in the Commune; antimilitarists would talk about the butchery of 1914-18; but the FPW
who cares? It's quite the same for 1939-40 (which seems a rather popular wargame theme in other countries; but I would like to know how many 1940 French tanks did Warlord Games sell to French players?) It's probably a bit sad for all these soldiers who fought as well as they could, but that's how history is remembered. |

History Channel ran a series on battles and Sedan 1870 was one of them featured. The battle was viewed from a French Officer's perspective and a private in Bavarian Army. It was worth watching once you'd skipped through the adverts but that's SKY TV for you :(( That was the main reason I ditched SKY TV plus it meant more money for spending on wargames figures ;)) |
