…NATO Allies.

"The Pentagon plans to keep an aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean longer than planned as a military presence to reassure NATO allies following Russia's intervention in Crimea, CNN has learned.

The Obama administration is expected to announce the development involving the USS George H. W. Bush on Thursday.

"It's all in the vein of reassuring our NATO allies of our commitment to them," one senior U.S. military official said. "This isn't about flexing our muscle at the Russians."

Of course it isn't.

First, we'd have to get the Turks to permit a carrier to transit the Dardanelles (which is against multiple international treaties, BTW), and then we'd need to put every single Aegis ship in the entire US Navy into the Black Sea to have enough SAMs to stop the overwhelming ASM swarms the Russians can deliver.

If anything goes wrong I bet the POTUS will say its the Bush's fault! : )

Yup.

I remembered when Germany announced their Ph 2000, at the time the most advanced SP artillery vehicle in the world. I thought that it would never fire a shot in anger and therefore an obscene waste of money. Maybe I spoke too soon, huh?

'Perhaps the European nations should reconsider their defense postures, since we can no longer afford to protect them.'

Now that is an entirely sensible suggestion. They will not do so unless they have to of course, which is also entirely sensible.

I like this idea. US taxpayers funding carrier operations so our allies can 'sleep better at night.' Not.

I wish they'd get this Crimea thing over soon … it's Bleeped text ing up the market … And US CVNs or not, Putin and his cronies/supporters are going to do what they want to do … regardless … There is probably a better chance of aliens from Tau Ceti attacking the Russians then the US … fortunately … IMO …
