not run-of-the-mill humanoids, I'm looking for affordable versions of all the horrific, goofy denizens of monster manual I, and any close proxies or creatures in a similar style or vein
floating things with one big eye, things that flay minds, gelatinous and oozing things, tentacled, many-legged, many-headed, etc. Anything that is cheap in 28, 25, 20 and 15mm can be considered and which could find a home in an inventive GM's dungeons. I cross-posted this to the Horror boards too because a lot of horrro minis are also suitable for fantasy, of course. Due to my location, I'd prefer UK or euro companies, though US with cheap shipping is fine, and I'd rather do without recommendations to go scouring ebay for d&d minis – it can end up more expensive than one bargained for. The more obscure sites the better, both for their sake and for mine, since I've scoured most of the better-known sites for their monsters. Cheers! |

Reaper's Bones line and the pre painted D&D stuff is pretty cheap well ebay is still your best bet, if you can find alot from one seller he may give you a s&h discount that's where I pick up most of mine |

Do you have comic books stores? My local comic book store has tons of open booster packs that they sell as individual pieces, with most the the relatively common stuff being at very reasonable prices. |

I second Reaper Bones and the Reaper Bones II line which is coming out only expands on that. Lots of your run of the mill dungeon monsters and lots of throwbacks to classic D&D monsters as well. Can't beat the prices either. |

+1 on Reaper Bones. Best thing to happen in Fantasy minis in years. |

Another option is Otherworld Miniatures. They make figures that are just like those in the Monster Manual I. otherworldminiatures.co.uk They are also in the UK so bonus there. Their pig faced orcs appear to be on sale right now. link |

floating things with one big eye, things that flay minds, gelatinous and oozing things, tentacled, many-legged, many-headed, etc. That is my specialty, so if you are not looking for hordes we could discuss a comission or two. I've done shipping to the UK before, and it usually hits the tolerance point for the customer at 15-20 minis. If you are interested, shoot me a line at: commissions@inlgames.com I also have to spend a week in Hawaii soon, so if you need them like now-right-now, I may not be able to cover that. |

Hi everyone, thanks for all the suggestions (and the offer, etotheipi!). some of the monsters in the new 'bones look great -anyone know when they'll be on general release? otherworld sculpts are superb, but even on sale, they're a bit pricy for me
my local comicshop is ok
but things like minis never seem to come on sale
I'll see if I can pressure them into opening up some blisters in the interests of the common good
if anyone knows of uk-based shops that offer d&d minis seperately, let me know. etotheipi – no worries about time – i'm gradually assembling stuff for playtesting the updated version of my new dungeoncrawl game (I made a thread about this last weekend) – which I eventually hope to get into production sometime in the medium future
children and other concerns allowing. I love making monstrosities, too – just finishing an elder thing out of insect, starfish and snake parts, actually, so I love your aesthetic. I could certainly make use of some of your creations, so when I get the urge, I'll be in touch! |

Traditionally one grabs a couple bags of cheap plastic "dinosaurs" The Rust Monster, Owl Bear, and Bullete all originated from such sets. |

The cheapest choice would be purchasing the Pathfinder Monster cardboard stand up set. comes with bases and full color heavy cardstock stand up monsters and Heroes for about $30 USD us. Hundreds of monsters. great art on them too! |

Another Reaper Bones suggestion ,also early Warhammer fantasy models the goblins, shaven and lizard men can go very cheap in plastic. EM4 do nice orcs and may still do the 50 shields for a pound . |

thanks for the suggestions, guys. david J: i've got tons of cheap plastic dinosaurs, insects, etc, already, but none these days have the weird monsters in them that '70s packs had – they're more naturalistic now. I use these for conversions all the time, but was hoping to get some iconic monsters such as cockatrice, beholder, etc in the right scale. I made a basilisk/cockatrice out of plastic rooster & small dragon & dino parts, but it's pretty huge – the size of a rhino, compared to 25mm figures. only warlock: thanks for the suggestion, but i'm using miniatures. carstock is ok on its own, but looks pretty weak next to 3d figures, i think. feet up: yeah, i have tons of old metal warhammer humanoids from my teens, plus tons more plastic ones in various scales (including the em4 ones). they're great, but what i want is the weird and extravagant dungeon monsters, the hook horrors, umber hulks, etc. as mentioned, some of these i have or can kitbash, but i cling to the vague hope that there are companies with cheap versions of these dudes out there, that i haven't yet tracked down. and i've tracked down lots form all manner of small companies
but
it's not enough! there are still many 'basic' dungeon freaks that it's hard to find cheap! still, i suppose i can wait for the Bones II stuff to find its way out onto the general market

If you are more 25mm than 28mm the the monsters from 15mm.co.uk fit in rather nicely. link The manticore stands 35mm tall. There are a lot of good classic monsters. The casting is very good. |

Good call on the HoT monsters, Kropotkin. I'm actually putting together a 20mm dungeon, so they look to be exactly the kind of things I'm looking for, at the right size and price. Cheers! |

If you decide 15mm is more your scale, there's some good options coming about. Splintered Light: link Rebel: link Khurasan: link |

I'm actually getting some 20mm stuff from splintered light, Scorpio, which should fit well with my 1/72 figures. I've got a fair amount of 15mm monsters and creatures, especially the larger ones like Blood Moon, but i'm sticking with 1/72 /20mm for the humans since i've got loads of 1/72 plastics (and some metal). |
