I came across this:
auction
auction QUESTION: Do you guys feel this is truly textured, meaning that if painted a pattern would still show through? Thoughts? Dan |

Textured wallpaper is deep enough, usually about 3mm ish. Be warned though, it's not designed to have elbows etc leaning on it as it is hollow under the raised bits. You will unemboss (is that a word?) the paper if you do. I guess you could put it over a skim of paster for strength, but if you willing to do that, just texture the plaster. |

Textured wallpaper is great stuff, and the good thing is most wallpaper/diy shops will give you plenty of free samples if you ask (best to pretend that you need the wallpaper for DIY purposes instead of modelmaking or they can get a bit funny about giving you some as they think you wont come back to buy full rolls!) Even so some of the types can be hollow underneath, I don't get too much hassle handling them once used, and you can always use the raised foam types that won't need backfilling. |

There are textured scrapbooking papers that can be useful too
I've used "basketball" (painted grey, obviously) as 15 mm cobblestones :). But they only come on 1 foot squares

Michaels had a bunch of textured papers in their scrapbooking aisle. |

If you could find the right pattern, you could have your "alien hive" walls done in no time at all! |

Infojunky: "Michaels had a bunch of textured papers in their scrapbooking aisle." They most definitely do! And they should be perfect for adding a stucco texture on buildings and other small areas. But, for adding a floor surface to a board, the paper or vinyl liner would have to be in a roll of some sort. Dan |

At Christmas check your stores that sell the Christmas villages. They sell rolls of vinyl "cobblestones."
Also available on Amazon.com year-round |

PS Yes, used as flooring, the paper will definitely show wear very quickly. Great on walls tho. |

That vinyl cobblestone material looks very promising. Quaint village as site of mech vs. drone battle? I say yes. |
