Try "Das Boot."

Tango0111 Mar 2014 11:36 p.m. PST

Yes, I agree it's another good one.
And the Captain is german, but I still vote for Sgt. Steiner. (smile).

James Coburn made a better Steiner than Richard Burton. Mind you, Breakthrough wasn't as good a movie.

Steiner is hard to beat.

Other noble heroes are Major Paul Wagner (Robert Vaughn) in A Bridge at Remagen, Captain 'Van der Poel' (Anthony Quale) in Ice Cold in Alex and Paul Baumer (Lew Ayres) in All Quiet on the Western Front.

I like the Austrian Anton Walbrook as Theo Kretschmar-Schuldorff in "The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp."

It's a different story for whom gives the best Nazi portrayal and I'll have to have a long hard think on that one.

dBerczerk12 Mar 2014 6:29 a.m. PST

Although the movie wasn't particularly good, I enjoyed Marlon Brandon's portrayal of the WWII German lieutenant in "The Young Lions."

corporalpat12 Mar 2014 6:31 a.m. PST

Steiner gets my vote. Das Boot and Stalingrad (1993) get high marks as well.

I like the portrayal of Adolf Galland in Battle of Britain, and Robert Shaw's driver in Battle of the Bulge.

"Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter"
Anyone here seen this yet? Looks promising to me. I have been looking for it everywhere on the North American side of the pond with no luck, online or otherwise. It is on German Youtube sites, but I cannot view them. Anyway, I bet there are some good Germans there.

Agreed, but I think Maximillian Schell was even better in that film.

I know it is TV, but no love for Lt Gruber and his "little tank"? What about Herr Flick or Von Smallhausen and of course the lovely Helga who always looked good in her underwear! :-)

crappa12 Mar 2014 1:46 p.m. PST

Maximillian Schell in Bridge Too Far. Also in Cross of Iron. Agree 100% with Robert Duval in The Eagle Has Landed. Just my opinion.

Fred Cartwright12 Mar 2014 1:52 p.m. PST

Agreed, but I think Maximillian Schell was even better in that film.

The bit when the Brit Paras in Arnhem have refused the offer to surrender and when he asked what to do now he says "flatten Arnhem"!

And the winner is:

For best german portait of THE real german dillema in war movies….. And sporting the german cultural value of philosphy in utter armagedon… and for being the real hero of that movie and the only one you deserves to stay alive….

Hptm Kiesel!!!!

PS:
Fw Steiner has many points for performance and efficency but the negative points for demotivation and not following orders make it impossible to consider him …

Martin Rapier13 Mar 2014 3:58 a.m. PST

Good choice Rudi, Kiesel is also my favourite character in CoI.
