to regular units. "According to Swedish defense contractor Saab, the U.S. Army is planning to issue recoilless rifles broadly to regular units for the first time in more than 30 years. The decision reflects the service's combat experience in Afghanistan. The ground combat branch had previously made a small purchase of recoilless rifles in 2012, but just for units in Afghanistan. All light infantry units may now receive them. Recoilless weapons get their name from the fact that they let some of the propelling force escape out of the rear of the weapon as it fires. These counteracting forces reduce recoil normally associated with bigger guns

Armand, Thanks for the youtube video link of the troops training with the weapon. In Iraq we were using the AT-4's and Dragons to fill in for what this weapon is designed to do. lol |

And there I was thinking about old Bren guns where the gas regulation could be set so that the gun tracked forward and by extension making it effectively recoilless to the user. Then I got to thinking about next generation assault rifles using 7.62 with a Bren like system. That's just how I roll. |

Funny, folks don't realize that the Carl Gustav is about sixty years old. The best thing to happen is that new ammo types have been developed and produced in the last ten or fifteen years. I love everything about the Carl G except carrying it. At first I was wondering if they were talking about the old 90mm recoiless or maybe even the 3.5" bazooka. Now that would be old school. |

See, Tango, this is what I was talking about. This story was already posted *TODAY* YouTube linkI never saw the Carl Gustaf article and I did see this one. Where is it written that there may be ONLY ONE THREAD about any given subject? I searched the FAQ in vain for such a policy. |

Interesting that the Army is adopting that now, as the Afghanistan fighting is drawing down. USMC uses the SMAW, which is a rocket launcher, for essentially the same mission and the Marines love it for urban combat. |
