Just received my two boxes of these horses giving me 12 critters; 6 mounted and 6 unridden. In 28mm, "manning" an ACW limber with 4 standing horses should "look" great. Since there are 3 limbers in the plastic box set, two sets of these will allow be enough for 4 horse teams for all 3.
I received my horses before the guns arrived. My first observation resulted in my admiration for the thought that the twins put into their products. These are BIG horses in relation to the riders. They should be! The best limber horses would be big, strong farm animals so they could haul the heavy loads associated with artillery and wagon loads.
They came with 3 kepi and 3 "round soft hats" as customers would expect for variety of headgear for arty crews -either side. The fit is excellent. Having made master and production molds for spin casting miniatures, I can appreciate the difficulties of making these small hats fit so well! You have to really understand mold and metal shrinkage to get it right. Of course, the Perry brothers have succeeded in their design very well!
Sorry for not having pictures, but they have them on their site. The tack on the horses is very crisp and while "I" am not a great painter of horses, I am pumped to lay a brush to these!
The facial features on these drivers are of 3 distinctly different men. None of this "we can save money by using the same head for everyone" mentality, here! Again, very crisp castings of the facial features. Worth spending a little extra time on since these boys will stand out like your mounted Generals do.
While not really inexpensive (these are metal castings-NOT plastic), there is also that "Multi-Media" aspect of doing the limber teams. (note: The running horse sets come with limber riders- standing set does not have those
nor would you really expect to see them unless in relaxed poses
.waiting to be ordered into action.) I think I will try to use some thin "Chart Pak" brand tape for linking reins; small chain as well to finish them off with. yeah, a LOT of effort, but well worth it when deployed on the table with sceniced bases.
The craftsmanship put in to this release, as with all the Perry minis I have bought so far, just begs for your best effort! I can strongly encourage you to get a set or two of these to go with your deployed gun set if you are an ACW 28mm gamer/collector/modeler that can appreciate a high quality product!
Disclaimer: NOT a sock puppet as I am primarily a 15mm and below gamer and ex-manufacturer of a competing brand, Minifigs. But I can tell a quality, well researched historical miniature product when I see it! Hope you find this as a somewhat helpful review if you were sitting on the fence deciding if to spring for these teams or not.
