Has anyone ever seen pictures of Libyan NCO's in Italy's colonial armies wearing the large, detachable rank insignia on their upper arms during the 1940/41 campaigns? My understanding is that from 1939 they would have replaced these with smaller chevrons sewn onto their jackets (having all officially become Italian citizens). I realise that the regulations may have taken time to be enforced, but I have photos of Libyan troops wearing the old colonial standing-collared jackets with the new insignia. I have plenty of pictures of Eritrean and Somali ascaris with the detachable insignia, but no Libyans. I only ask because the Osprey book on Italy's troops in these campaigns shows them in the colour plates, and I am interested to know if this is reasonable. (Obviously I would like to add this colourful item to my figures, but I would also like to get it right.) |
