"An anti-submarine ship may have been the first casualty of the Russian incursion into Crimea, but it was hardly an act of violence, much less war: the Russian navy sank one of its own, junked vessels to create an obstacle, a Ukrainian official said on Wednesday. Ukraine Defence Ministry spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Alexei Mazepa said Russian sailors pulled the anti-submarine vessel Ochakov out of a naval junkyard and sank it in the straits that connect the Black Sea with a body of water known as Donuzlav lake. He said the act was intended to prevent Ukrainian navy ships from leaving a nearby base and going to sea. The sinking was the latest in a series of moves by Russian naval forces in the area that were jangling the nerves of Ukrainian officers

The Russians began by scuttling their ships to protect the harbour, then used their naval cannon as additional artillery and the ships' crews as marines.[16] Those ships deliberately sunk by the end of 1855 included Grand Duke Constantine, City of Paris (both with 120 guns), Brave, Empress Maria, Chesme, Yagondeid (84 guns), Kavarna (60 guns), Konlephy (54 guns), steam frigate Vladimir, steamboats Thunderer, Bessarabia, Danube, Odessa, Elbrose, and Krein. |

I suspect they'd be less pleased if we used the same tactics on the Bosphorus Straits, thus neutralizing their only warm-water port, and making their Black Sea Fleet largely irrelevant. Of course, it could be used for sightseeing excursions on the new, Black Sea lake. I can hear Vlad yelling now

I guess the Turks, Romanians, Bulgarians and Ukrainians wouldn't be too chuffed either |
Mako11 | 07 Mar 2014 11:47 p.m. PST |
Turks might like it, since they can transport goods overland, or via ferries around the blockade, charging a nice, substantial fee for their assistance. They'll be rich. Yes, others might not like it, but we can't please everyone, can we? |

And of course blocking the port is an act of war

So is blocking the toilet Cptn. Tired of the flag waving. The "law abiding" has helped Iraq, Lybia, Kosovo, Afghanistan and a few others, fact? Anyway i thought we were supposed to stay away from all these 'touchy' subjects no matter how we pretend to broach them as "what ifs" not so Ed? |

Don't be so shocked, international law is not "supreme." Like any other set of laws/rules/guidelines, it works great until someone has the strength and will to decide not to follow it. |

Captain Canada is right. It's clearly an act of War under the International Law. Sad, but Mardaddy is right too (smile). Amicalement Armand |

No, that's silly. Obviously it was "local naval defense militias" that sank one of their old corvettes as a blockship and are blockading the port with their bleeping Slava class cruiser that they bought on the civvie market. Just ask Uncle Vlad, he's an honest guy. -Kle. |

Zargon Two wrongs is a right? |

Who said anything about wrongs and rights? actually your on the right track, its about 'rights' rights of a bunch of Oligogs with Fascist backing or the people who DO feel worried about their existence. Please check history on how these Fascist groups came into being as well (as far back as WW2, Cptn. This is no glorious nationalistic endeavor, and would you want to be friends allies with them? Or is it old Cold War rhetoric you hancker for? No wrongs or right just a fairness for the people who live there. Anyway its politics were moving into again. I'll stop (can feel that muzzle getting fitted as I finish this ;) you can have your lost words again. Cheers all |

Zargon An interesting rhetorical style – make a parting shot as you leave. Any nation that acts as Russia has now needs to be stopped. Any study of history will show you that. And I will now withdraw reminding you that the ANC was associated with terrorism and communism
