The Ki-44 was an excellent fighter which would have IJAAF much better than Ki 43 but it didn't fit the pilots ideal of extreme maneuverability. On another note the Ki 61 was code named Tony because allied intelligence didn't believe the Japanese could develop such a technically advanced fighter and thought it was a copy of the Macchi 202!
