Irrational Number Line Games' idea of the week this week is a quick and dirty scenario set up for the Battle of Tannenberg (1914). The scenario focuses more on the strategic dynamics of the situation (Samsonov and Rennenkampf's feud, lack of rail for the Russians, one of the golden moments in intelligence collection for the Germans) rather than regiment-by-regiment order or battle and engagements.

Overlooking the Landscape

Still, playing it out a few times, it captures something of the essence of the commanders' challenges in something you can set up and play out in half a day.

The article (well, couple of paragraphs) on our site also discusses transporting the battle out of early 20th Century Europe, which is eminently achievable given the structure of the scenario write up.
