All the ones I would mention have been listed above. My favorites are:

Red Storm Rising
Team Yankee
Red Army

And on the lighter side, Cap'n Fatso, by Adm Daniel Gallery

I really enjoyed the Anthony Price "Audley" series. link

Otherwise it's mainly spy stories by such as Le Carre, Deighton, Furst, Egleton, Trenhaile, and Lionel Davidson.

General Sir John Hackett's , "The Third World War" & "The Untold Story, The Third World War".

Not really Cold War but the Bond books,Vortex,Caldron and Red Phoenix.

Sparker06 Mar 2014 1:58 p.m. PST

First Contact by Kenneth Macksey MC. Actually a Canadian Army training Publication, but written as a novel to get the Canucks to actually read it (slowly, obviously!)

Seriously, a great read and good source of scenarios around the 4 CMBG Brigade group. (Who I acknowledge in every way were intellectual giants!

:-)

If you want to do a Soviet invasion in Aug '45 then the Red Gambit Series by Colin Gee is designed for just that! They are perfect for scenario development to include maps.

Red Storm Rising is a classic, and Team Yankee is also good. The Third World war by Hackett is also worth a look.

Another recommendation for First Clash (which is what Sparker meant when he said 'First Contact'… he was probably watching Star Trek at the time…). ;)

Sparker06 Mar 2014 10:54 p.m. PST

You buggar! Right enough though – First Clash!

Although I am a trekkie at heart I was actually getting confused with the 'Contact!' Canadian Army wargaming rules they used for training!

Jemima Fawr07 Mar 2014 8:11 a.m. PST

Good point. Oddly enough I did write a First Clash scenario called "Contact! Wait. Out."

Just ordered the Red effect, i was there in the 70's and we often wondered (when we were sober that is ) what would happen, though we had a pretty good idea, probably why we got drunk! Cherry B anybody?
