This little project gives a nice sense of scale. Indeed it makes me believe that sub-light space war could be interesting operationally due to the distances involved. link

Ye gods! Excellent way to bring home the vastness of space. Fun, too. |

If it takes you less than 8.5 minutes to scroll from the Sun to the Earth then you are scrolling faster than the speed of light. |

Back in the early '90s, FASA put out an operational level wargame for their Renegade Legion line. "Prefect" dealt with the invasion of a solar system, and all that entailed. Most of the "battle" was spent simply trying to DETECT the opposing force in the vastness of space. |

I did some number crunching (well, set up a spreadsheet to do it for me): IF you have a drive capable of continuous acceleration of 9m/s/s, Earth to Mars is 96 hours. Of course, that's one very big IF. |

Did 'small scroll' out to about Earth, then switched to large. Tried to keep me honest with the little bon mots forcing me to scroll back, occasionally. Giggling all the way, my office mates are looking at me a bit askance. One G flight? Oh, be still my heart! Doug |

I just did the whole trip on an iphone, my thumbs hate me now. "My god, it's full of nothing." |

I love the way the comments go from chatty to philosophical as you go along almost like an astronaut as he copes with the increasing time and loneliness by getting more and more introspective. Robert |

I cheated -- or was smart (choose your ethos). I looked at the page source to read the rest of the bon mots, then did a pinpoint tour to the remaining planets. Probably also proving the philosophical points of the author. |
