I'm interested in painting 4 each of F-86, F-84, F-80, F9F Panther and MiG-15. The internet is full of sample pictures of markings for these aircraft, but if I wanted to paint 4 aircraft of each type so that each 4 is in the same squadron, I need to change the numbers. However, I don't know how the numbers are assigned. Can someone either explain the numbering system for any of these aircraft or point me to a resource?

The "Buzz numbers" on USAF aircraft fuselage were just a two letter code indicating the aircraft model (F-86: FU, F-80: FT, F-84: FS) followed by the last 3 digits of the aircraft's production serial number. They are not unit related. see link

USN uses a 3 digit side number painted on the nose. I think the actual system varies between air wings during that time period, but you can expect aircraft from the same squadron has the same first digit. Typically the fighter squadrons will use 1-4 on the first digit. See Wings Palette and compare the numbers on aircraft from the same squadron:

A note of interest is that the number system is octal, i.e. "8" and "9" are not used.

Don't know about what to use for the MiGs. I think the Soviet system uses the same color numbers to indicate the regiment within an air division.
