I would have thought the general rule against talking about religion would have that covered already.

"All I said was 'This fish is good enough for Jehovah'".

Stryderg04 Mar 2014 6:11 p.m. PST

Well, since you asked our opinion (and you did), I would suggest that a little respect would go a long way in preventing a Dog Housing. And to answer your question…all of them.

Stryderg04 Mar 2014 6:15 p.m. PST

Ok, that might have come across a little snooty. It was meant as a general comment on the seeming decrease in respectfulness for others opinions.

Glengarry504 Mar 2014 6:15 p.m. PST

Can we talk about Thor or Set or is discussion of the Osprey's Rules "Of Gods and Mortals" considered offensive?

Rogzombie Fezian04 Mar 2014 6:30 p.m. PST

It seems Lovecraft had a wider usage for blasphemy…I always wondered about that.

doc mcb04 Mar 2014 6:33 p.m. PST

Unless the applicable definition is any sort of profanity such as G-- D--- (which simple courtesy would prohibit) then "blasphemy" is going to be specific to a particular religion. For example, I believe there is a song including lyrics to the effect that someone is 'so bad not even God can save me." A Christian would consider that blasphemous. But on TMP I'm imagine it just boils down to some basic tolerance and restraint.

Rebelyell200604 Mar 2014 6:36 p.m. PST

It was meant as a general comment on the seeming decrease in respectfulness for others opinions.

That seems to be a fallacy that our society is widely adopting, that all opinions are equally valid and deserving of respect; that opinions are a good alternative to facts. Does the Time Cube guy deserve respect for his opinions? What about a schizophrenic patient in a hospital claiming to be Jesus? How far should we go to avoid hurting people's feelings? Is posting one of the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad comics a DH-able offense if the thread is relevant to the topic?

Edit: fixed url

I know what you're getting at and tend to agree. Having said that, I don't think that's the issue here. Courtesy is rarely the wrong choice.

Regarding the OP, that just makes me wonder if folks are tired of the usual politics and Tango-bashing and are moving on to stirring up new tempests for their teapots. :)

Caesar04 Mar 2014 7:10 p.m. PST

I don't particularly like what Paint Pig was writing but blasphemy?

John the OFM04 Mar 2014 7:15 p.m. PST

Is anybody in the DH now for blasphemy? I thought it was for run of the mill "politics".

Rebelyell200604 Mar 2014 7:19 p.m. PST

John,

Paint Pig is in for three days, for saying something I will sometimes say while frustrated. And sometimes, "on a cracker" instead of "on a bike".

Stryderg04 Mar 2014 7:29 p.m. PST

@ Rebelyell2006
Oh, I don't think all opinions are valid, some of them are down right insane. Doesn't mean I'm going to tell the holder of said opinion.

Brian Smaller04 Mar 2014 7:38 p.m. PST

I always thought that any deity who takes offence at something a mere mortal says must be a sensitive wee petal.

Suspending a member for blasphemy is pretty bizarre in the 21st century. Some people on here, including ones who make these decisions would probably faint clean away hearing a standard Kiwi conversation, replete with 'blasphemy', 'crude language' and all the other utterings that are prohibited here.

John the OFM04 Mar 2014 7:53 p.m. PST

I always thought that any deity who takes offence at something a mere mortal says must be a sensitive wee petal.

A deity can do whatever He/She wants. It's one of the perks of he job.

Two men say they're Jesus
One of them must be wrong.
There's a protest singer;
he's singing protest songs.

Paint Pig is in for three days…

Although I barely know him, it seems to me that he might enjoy the uniqueness of his sentence.

Rebelyell200604 Mar 2014 8:02 p.m. PST

Although I barely know him, it seems to me that he might enjoy the uniqueness of his sentence.

Not that unique, unless he was posting from his phone while in the Vatican. Then it would be kinky…

combatpainter Fezian04 Mar 2014 8:04 p.m. PST

Pretty confusing to me.

Just one more clue that TMP is not Frothers. grin

Is apostasy next?

Probably a poor choice of words by Julia, but the offense was breaking the rule against religion on the forum.

UltraOrk04 Mar 2014 9:30 p.m. PST

'I'm pretty sure having my head uncovered Bleeped textes off some "god" or another'

It's an abomination unto Nuggin.

"breaking the rule against religion on the forum"

that's a standing rule
cool

buuuuuut I don't know that a pic of jesus on a bike is a religious comment

fortunately, not my call

Rebelyell200604 Mar 2014 10:06 p.m. PST

So are you going to change it to religion now ????

I'd prefer if he did. Keeping the forum civil by banning politics and religion is one thing, but calling something "blasphemy" seems perverse in my mind.

buuuuuut I don't know that a pic of jesus on a bike is a religious comment

Not if we are talking about Jesús and the other members of the Mexican Hell's Angels, that would be completely different.

zippyfusenet04 Mar 2014 11:46 p.m. PST

Hey, Paint Pig! Wanna get stoned?

Glengarry505 Mar 2014 12:29 a.m. PST

Actually, I was kinda expecting the Spanish Inquisition…

On what planet is that particular phrase 'blasphemy', or even discussion of religion? Particularly given the country of origin of the poster.

The urban dictionary describes it as:

"The using of christ's name, not necessarily in vain, but to exclaim surprise, disbelief, or disgust.
Also used in the excellent film, Ginger Snaps."

Are we not even allowed to mention a religious word now? So I'm guessing 'Moslem', 'Christian' and 'Jewish' are out?

Lord, give me strength.

TelesticWarrior05 Mar 2014 3:35 a.m. PST

I feel pretty sad (and bemused) that Paint Pig got Dawghoused simply for using a standard cultural expression. I thought it was a good bit of banter between us at the time.

Lets please have a bit of sense here and have Paint Pig released.

combatpainter Fezian05 Mar 2014 4:08 a.m. PST

I thought riding a bike was healthy.

MajorB05 Mar 2014 4:43 a.m. PST

The rule that paint Pig infringed was more probably the Profanity rule than the Religion rule.

Rebelyell200605 Mar 2014 4:53 a.m. PST

Incredibly old-school profanity, like exclaiming "by Odin's codpiece".

Doug em4miniatures05 Mar 2014 4:54 a.m. PST

Is "OMG" acceptable?

Doug

Rebelyell200605 Mar 2014 5:44 a.m. PST

It depends on what the "G" represents. "Ow my gallbladder" should be fine, unless there was a minor Slavic river god named Gallbladder, in which case we better gather up stones.

138SquadronRAF05 Mar 2014 5:45 a.m. PST

Blasphemy is the only victimless crime.

"please define "blasphemy""

Im sorry, my fault, referring to Religion Rule.

elsyrsyn05 Mar 2014 7:26 a.m. PST

It's a pretty common figure of speech, and hardly (in my opinion, which means nothing) worthy of a stint in the DH. Are we going to DH people for exclaiming "Zounds!" now, too?

Doug

The Gray Ghost05 Mar 2014 7:59 a.m. PST

Lets please have a bit of sense here and have Paint Pig released.

I agree, why this reminds me of another "technical problem" that led to another un DHing

MarescialloDiCampo05 Mar 2014 8:28 a.m. PST

actually to some religions – the depicting of any representation of 'man' is blasphemy…
so if you paint little soldiers (i do, but oh so rarely now) – we are collectively "in that category"

streetline05 Mar 2014 9:55 a.m. PST

I certainly woship false idols. In fact, I have my eye on some more false idols (probably from GZG) as we speak…

Redcurrant05 Mar 2014 10:21 a.m. PST

Jesus may not have had a bicycle, but I believe that Moses had a motorbike, as the roar of his Triumph could be heard throughout the land.
