all of them. |
Stryderg | 04 Mar 2014 6:15 p.m. PST |
Ok, that might have come across a little snooty. It was meant as a general comment on the seeming decrease in respectfulness for others opinions. |

Can we talk about Thor or Set or is discussion of the Osprey's Rules "Of Gods and Mortals" considered offensive? |

It seems Lovecraft had a wider usage for blasphemy
I always wondered about that. |
doc mcb | 04 Mar 2014 6:33 p.m. PST |
Unless the applicable definition is any sort of profanity such as G-- D--- (which simple courtesy would prohibit) then "blasphemy" is going to be specific to a particular religion. For example, I believe there is a song including lyrics to the effect that someone is 'so bad not even God can save me." A Christian would consider that blasphemous. But on TMP I'm imagine it just boils down to some basic tolerance and restraint. |
Rebelyell2006 | 04 Mar 2014 6:36 p.m. PST |
It was meant as a general comment on the seeming decrease in respectfulness for others opinions. That seems to be a fallacy that our society is widely adopting, that all opinions are equally valid and deserving of respect; that opinions are a good alternative to facts. Does the Time Cube guy deserve respect for his opinions? What about a schizophrenic patient in a hospital claiming to be Jesus? How far should we go to avoid hurting people's feelings? Is posting one of the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad comics a DH-able offense if the thread is relevant to the topic? Edit: fixed url |
darthfozzywig | 04 Mar 2014 6:52 p.m. PST |
That seems to be a fallacy that our society is widely adopting I know what you're getting at and tend to agree. Having said that, I don't think that's the issue here. Courtesy is rarely the wrong choice. Regarding the OP, that just makes me wonder if folks are tired of the usual politics and Tango-bashing and are moving on to stirring up new tempests for their teapots. :) |

John the OFM | 04 Mar 2014 7:15 p.m. PST |

Rebelyell2006 | 04 Mar 2014 7:19 p.m. PST |
John, Paint Pig is in for three days, for saying something I will sometimes say while frustrated. And sometimes, "on a cracker" instead of "on a bike". |
Stryderg | 04 Mar 2014 7:29 p.m. PST |
@ Rebelyell2006 Oh, I don't think all opinions are valid, some of them are down right insane. Doesn't mean I'm going to tell the holder of said opinion. |
Brian Smaller | 04 Mar 2014 7:38 p.m. PST |
I always thought that any deity who takes offence at something a mere mortal says must be a sensitive wee petal. Suspending a member for blasphemy is pretty bizarre in the 21st century. Some people on here, including ones who make these decisions would probably faint clean away hearing a standard Kiwi conversation, replete with 'blasphemy', 'crude language' and all the other utterings that are prohibited here. |

"breaking the rule against religion on the forum" that's a standing rule cool buuuuuut I don't know that a pic of jesus on a bike is a religious comment fortunately, not my call |
Rebelyell2006 | 04 Mar 2014 10:06 p.m. PST |
So are you going to change it to religion now ???? I'd prefer if he did. Keeping the forum civil by banning politics and religion is one thing, but calling something "blasphemy" seems perverse in my mind. buuuuuut I don't know that a pic of jesus on a bike is a religious comment Not if we are talking about Jesús and the other members of the Mexican Hell's Angels, that would be completely different. |

On what planet is that particular phrase 'blasphemy', or even discussion of religion? Particularly given the country of origin of the poster. The urban dictionary describes it as: "The using of christ's name, not necessarily in vain, but to exclaim surprise, disbelief, or disgust. Also used in the excellent film, Ginger Snaps." Are we not even allowed to mention a religious word now? So I'm guessing 'Moslem', 'Christian' and 'Jewish' are out? Lord, give me strength. |

I feel pretty sad (and bemused) that Paint Pig got Dawghoused simply for using a standard cultural expression. I thought it was a good bit of banter between us at the time. Lets please have a bit of sense here and have Paint Pig released.

so if you paint little soldiers (i do, but oh so rarely now) – we are collectively "in that category" |
