"The battalion is awaiting the order to sail, having received orders to join an expedition to Flanders, commanded by General Graham. Their strength, present fit for immediate service is 465 NCOs and other ranks, including 34 recently joined recruits, and the battalion is eager for action after months of inaction which, for many of the men, has meant working as labourers on the King's works on Jersey. As they have grumbled, this not why they enlisted.

Captain Richardson, who has only rarely been seen by the battalion during the past few years, has resigned his commission. Lieutenant Pratt and Paymaster Wray have rejoined from leave. Although the battalion is about to go on active service, 30 men have been transferred to the first battalion, while a further 8 have joined veteran and garrison battalions. There are 11 recruits with the recruiting parties.

There has been only one death this month, and little sickness. Private Edward Costello has been promoted to corporal…"
