I'm thinking about putting together a Communal Italian Army in 15mm for FoG. However I am put of by the heraldry of which I know next to nothing. Would it be ok to use LBM's medieval transfers and banners for such an army?

See the banners and transfers here:

None of those really look Italian Communal – except the Templar style red crosses would be fine for, say, Bologna and some Milanese and Florentines (it's a very widespread device) …

Best is just to pick your city then paint to that livery. Florence is a very complex fleur de lys … Siena a super simple white over black. Those colours then tend to recur throughout the army in liveries and badges.

There is a good WRG guide to this period by Ian Ian Heath which simplifies it all if you can find a copy

For flags, have a look at link – Italian ones about halfway down.

Some nice colour plates of combatants at Montaperti (1260) at link including flags and coats of arms

Mirliton sells losts of Italian communal flags and shield covers. The shield covers are paper and you have to glue them on the shields, but the range is prestty complete.

Do Pisa. Plain red shields for most of the period :)

Painting the heraldry might seem daunting but you get used to it. It's one of my favourite things to do now.

I'll second the Mirliton shields – they will fit LH shields as well going by what I have. The flags are very nice too.
