Units in close combat may not be targets of fire. How about un-engaged units counting as support in close combat? May they be targeted? May they shoot? We have been playing they may not do either. Artillery that evades enemy close combat – is it silenced? We have been playing it is. But if they can pull back one base width and then fire later, they'll be mighty powerful. Likewise, artillery that has fallen back one base width in close combat (any more and they break) – is it silenced? Again, we have been playing it is. We played another game of Champions Hill last week. I went up to the Catskills and didn't get around to writing an AAR. Maybe later. We're not playing ACW for the next couple weeks because the Rebel player is not going to be attending. we'll return to this when he comes back. |

Any unengaged unit--even if they're supporting--is eligible to fire and to be the target of fire. This is the ideal opportunity to drive off enemy support. Artillery evading is silenced, spun around to face the other way. Your second question about artillery withdrawing as a recoil is a good one that isn't explained in the rules. The FAQ will be updated to answer this question as a yes, they should be silenced. With regard to Champion Hill, I'd personally recommend not giving Pemberton the extra "what if" division. The scenario is much more tense for the rebels if they're short-handed, as they were historically. |

Thanks for the answers. As for Champion Hill, we didn't use the extra division either time. The Union got close enough to see the bridge but not to take it. |
