Looking to get a game for my neice, aged 5. Want to paint the figures up myself, prefer 25\8mm. Games should give her a good basic introduction to 'fantasy' 'war'\games which i hope will be life long. Thinking of some thing along the lines of a dungeon adventure BUT not in too mush detailo but that would allow her to grow into morev compklexed games of this nature. Any ideas guys?? thanks |

Sounds like something simple you can create yourself. Heroes meet a monster and simply roll a dice, needing to roll a certain number or higher to vanquish the beast. Find some nice shiny dungeon bits/tiles, and a few figures and some dice, and I think you're good to go. Then you can add details as she learns. Edit: But there are several one-page rule sets out there that may fit the bill; I hope someone here can point you toward those; I can't remember where I found them. |

TMP link TMP link Although at that age, substitute "beat" or "defeat" the monster for "kill" in my original comments on the above threads. And instead of their " character" being killed, they just have to move back a bit or something. The key is treating it like a story they can control, but keeping it all very, very simple and very, very brief. Oh, and while it really has zero tactical play, the classic Dungeon! boardgame is workable. But I'd find a way to fudge the dice in her favor, or go strictly co-op play. |

I second Tony58 suggestion , the young'uns pick it up really fast . This knowledge is very useful for all the other themes in the game engine for the future. Also remember that what they lack in strategy they make up for in dice rolls. |

The Faerys Tale RPG is pretty good. My 7 and 5 year old have enjoyed that. Keeping things simple and moving is key, but you already know that. :) |

There is a game in the song series designed for kids. Song of fur and buttons. Very cool. Nobody dies. Plus you have an excuse to buy th eureka models. |

Do you have any indication that she is interested in this kind of thing ? Personally I would say 5 is too young for miniatures games. I would try some boardgames first. Mice & Mystics is supposed to be very good for children, but may be better for when she's a few years older. |

I tend to agree that 5 is a little young. That said, SOBH is a really fun game, and my supplement to it link is written for the 20mm talking animals that Splintered Light makes. If she enjoys Redwall or Narnia or such -- or if she will in future -- she might enjoy a SOBH campaign based on those figures. link David McBride is working on a simple set of fantasy rules and play testing them with an 8 years old; see his blog for a couple of play test write-ups. link |

for a 5 years old I would just place the miniatures on table, move them at will (maybe use a stick or a board divided in squares, or hexes) and roll one die when hand to hand combat, the higher wins. Since your neice will likely take the good ones, vs the bad ones (yours), she has some magic power that annihilates almost all of your attacks. Prepare to loose all your games. When she grows up you can try something more elaborate, like this one page fantasy skirmish set link SOBH is awesome for little girls and boys, but I'd say from about 10 years old. And make her paint some figures
cheap plastic medieval army men, with acrylic paints, for example. |

Goblin quest is great for this. Check out this blog for the rules etc. Free, designed by a father for this exact purpose, and simple, but clever. link |

My 10 and 7 year old were playing Of Gods and Mortals (a SOBH variant) over the weekend, pretty much by themselves. So a bit older, but if you are going to be there helping out I'm sure she can grasp the rules. |

My six year old daughter plays Adventures in Lost Lands by Two Hour Wargames with me. We play co-op against the dinosaurs and she loves it. |
