Hands up(again)who has 6mm & 15mm sci-fi and….do you duplicate the armies and fight bigger games? Do you play skirmish in 15mm and the duplicate the force for play at company level for 6mm. DO you play totally different backgrounds in 15mm to 6mm. How do you do both at the same time. Or do you see that as mad and only game in the one size/scale?
I ask because I love 15mm but keep looking longingly at the 6mm stuff coming out too.

All I do is 6mm Sci-fi … since '90 … 6mm all thought some think they are harder to paint. I have no trouble, but there are a lot of great 6mm ranges out there. And a lot of very nice stuff. As I always say, if you as interested in 6mm Sci-fi surf the Tactical Command site. link Also among the things I like about 6mm, is the ranges are much more in line with reality. Look at most of the ranges in say, 40K 25/28mm … does not work for me. And to play range with more realism with say, 40K, you'd need a basketball court or your backyard … evil grin

Hand going up here. Yes I play 6mm, 10mm, 15mm, 20mm, and 28mm and all forces/rules are different (and never the twain shall meet.

Hands up as well. Back in the day, I had to do considerable converting to get my Dirtside army reproduced in 15mm for skirmish games. These days, I try to pick minis that are already available in multiple scales.

I'm a huge fan of campaigns and multi-scale gaming.

6mm, 15mm, 20mm (aka 1/72 scale), 25mm, 28mm, 1/450 scale (ie., Silent Death), 1/1000 scale, et al., I have no shame to my game.evil grin

Been going at it since I painted up my first Starguard! figures in 1976, and I will Goddess willing have to have a pair of percentile dice or a tape measure or paint brush pried from my cold, dead fingers when I'm 103.evil grin

6mm & 15mm using FWC – different forces though

Gaz004502 Mar 2014 12:20 p.m. PST

6mm and 25mm….but no overlap in settings……then there's spaceship fleets and 'bigger' fighter/escort stuff too……and historical from 1/3000 to 28mm………and lots in between……..

Lion in the Stars02 Mar 2014 12:21 p.m. PST

For a while I was leaning on 6mm and 28mm, Games Workshop stuff. My plan was to have a couple companies of Dark Angels in 28mm, and then the whole damn chapter in 6mm, plus the entire fleet in whatever scale BFG is. I also planned on having Tau in both 28mm and 6mm, plus BFG scale. But then GW Bleeped texted me off for the last time, and I've sold off almost all my stuff and even stopped contributing to the TactiComms E:A development.

Then I started 15mm with Flames of War, and have focused heavily on 15mm for almost all my gaming. The only 28mm I still have and work on is for Infinity (might be other makes in there, but the mechanics are Infinity).

I admit I've considered doing the same army in both 15mm and 6mm, Stargrunt and Dirtside, and if Khurasan and/or Antenociti's start making 6mm I might really be persuaded to do so.

GypsyComet02 Mar 2014 12:26 p.m. PST

The only forces I'm explicitly duplicating in 15mm and 6mm are the Quar, but not under the same rules. There has certainly been an ongoing 40k in 15mm project, but that is more for the look and the tropes, not the rules.

Angel Barracks02 Mar 2014 12:31 p.m. PST

I only play 6mm.
However I play 6mm as skirmish.
I believe my 6mm skirmish set ups are the match* in terms of visual appeal as many 15mm, hence I see no need to buy 15mm.

* in some cases better.

but keep looking longingly at the 6mm stuff coming out too.

Do it!

:D

I have 3mm and 6mm and duplicate armies, although the 3mm armies tend to be the earlier versions of the 6mm ones. If there were more manufacturers who did 6-to-15 continuities, I would love it.

However, AB is quite right that the quality of 6mm is continuously improving, and so I'm more and more interested in 6mm for skirmish, since I have hard limits on cost and space to work in.

Duplicate SF armies?

Not specifically but it is tempting to try.

I wonder if I could reproduce my favorite SF armies in 3/6/15/25 mm? Well elements of it in the larger sizes… I don't think so.

Historical would be easier given the significantly different styles of SF lines out there…

I won't even think about fantasy…

boy wundyr x02 Mar 2014 9:23 p.m. PST

I do Traveller in 6 and 15mm, and have other 6mm and 15mm sci-fi projects (and a couple 28s), those are all different backgrounds.

markmors02 Mar 2014 11:13 p.m. PST

I have 6mm Epic stuff and MicroWorld stuff because I wanted to do a Titan Legion and enemies and allies. I now have a decent amount of 15mm because I discovered Khurasan some months ago(then had to look at GZG). I also have 20mm Britannia WW2 from years ago. I love the slightly cartoony look in miniatures. And of course, 28mm GW from years ago and some new near future stuff.

Khusrau03 Mar 2014 3:02 a.m. PST

I have 6mm for FWC and variety, but I also have 15mm for gritty near-future for Tomorrow's War

The Burt03 Mar 2014 1:01 p.m. PST

Yes, I'm 6mm all the way for sci-fi gaming. Like Legion 4 mentions it's all about scale ranges and maneuver. From a design standpoint, economy is one of my top 3 goals. And that includes not only money but also economy of space. Not everybody has a 12' x 8' table in the basement. In 6mm you can have a quite large game on a 6' x 4' table and a good sized battle on a 4ish' x 3ish' table easily. With plenty of maneuver and realistic fire ranges for the type of weaponry we usually see in a Sci-Fi game.

Don't get me wrong, I like 15mm and 10mm too! But I'm not much of a 25/28mm guy except for skirmish level games (defined as 1-12 figs per side). At that level, I LOVE 28mm. But not for any sort of massed battles. I agree with Legion 4, in order to have realistic scale ranges, you better move the party out to the back yard. Mind where you step…we have dogs.

(Dropping hand) I only do 6mm minis now. I used to do 15mm and 28mm along with 6mm. The 6mm minis offer me more flexibility in terms of cost, space required, and preferred style of gaming. I haven't regretted dropping the 15s or 28s one bit.

6mm FTW!

I have 6mm, 15mm and 28mm.
I've pretty much stopped buying 28 mm and I keep telling myself I'm going to pick either 6mm or 15mm and stick with that but then … Oooohhh shiny!!!!!
There's simply to much great stuff coming out in both scales and both have their advantages.Althoug for me this is migitated somewhat as I play skirmish and mass battles in both scales so for me its more like 15mm = more detail and easier to convert and 6mm = I don't have to get of my lazy bum during solo games ;-)

Rothgar04 Mar 2014 7:25 a.m. PST

I do 6mm and 15mm sci-fi as well. I use a variety of rules. Some rules work better for 6mm and some for 15mm, but there is plenty of overlap. Heck… I even made my own rules. I'm still of a mind that, a base is a base, whether it has 1 mini on it or 20. You can use FoW-style basing and skirmish rules, if you want to..

Always remember, rules are guidelines. It's your game, change it, if necessary, so that you enjoy playing it.

This and always this.

I have some 15mm, but truth be told I haven't really added much to my collection in years, though I do have some Peter Pig AK47 figures to finish.

Mostly I play and model in 6 and 10 mm, considering the latter to be heroic 6mm, which are better for things like BattleTech IMO, because the mechs are far too tall for my tastes these days to fit visually with better scaled 6mm products.

The Burt04 Mar 2014 5:54 p.m. PST

Yes, true eye level at 6mm figs (assuming a 5'10" human) is the goal. Our good genetically altered friends, the Space Marines (how such a common sci-fi phrase got trademarked, I'll never know), are much taller than 5'10". Therefore, it is acceptable that they would stand straight to scale at what around 8mm? While our standard grunt would have to remain at true 6mm for proper scale. SO my point is there are some 10mm figs that will work just fine at 6mm scale. They just become really big guys. Heck for that matter, the 15's could be used as true giants! Watch out here comes some 15 foot tall….Austrian Line Infantry? 20 feet with the shako. :)

If you throw in the word Victorian, then yes. In 1/1200, 6mm, 15mm, and 28mm. 'Regular' Sci FI just in 6mm. For now, but 15mm is beckoning…

KJdidit09 Mar 2014 8:06 p.m. PST

I have 3mm, 6mm, 15mm, and (a small number of) 28mm scifi. Historical ranges I have are in 3mm, 6mm, and 15mm scales.
